I've got a '78 leyland Moke (998) and am wondering if it is possible to put a second fuel tank (running into the original) on the driver's side, how would you run it to the other one? Is it even feasable? :?

I'm also planning on putting extractors and a larger exhaust in the next week- any ideas on what size would be best and I gather that LCB's(whatever they are) are the best extractors.:?

I'm quite new to this modding business so you'll have to speak slowly and use big words and stuff. Any help or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers :D

Difficult to do, as the side pods are the main structural members of a Moke,
so it's not a good idea to go cutting the bottoms out of them.

If you could get your hands on a rear mounted tank out of an export Moke
that would be easy. Fits inside the rear subframe. Exhaust would need to re-routed, but sounds like you're doing that anyway :)

I'm doing what awd said. I have an export and I'm fitting a normal tank in the left hand pod. Exhaust needs a few extra bends to accomodate the rear tank.

Alright well I'll definitely drop the drivers side one then. Export hey... Can't find a tank up here via the phone so I think I'll have to shelve that idea and throw a jerry in the back for distance trips till I find one. Thanks though.

But can anyone help me with what the best sized exhaust for the 998 would be? I'm guessing 1 3/4 but again I don't know much.

Which way would those twists be for that tank so I can get them done for when I get the thing?

1 3/4 is as large as you would want to go for a 998. 1 3/4 is generally good for 1098 and 1275s but I think it does OK with 998s :?

I would go the 1.5 inch pipe to a larger muffler and outlet pipe...

works well on my 998... and the noise is ... well deafening sometimes.

:D

I've got a new tail pipe made to fit around the rear tank. It's way at the back of the shed but I'll g a photo of it for you and give you the lengths. From memory all the bends are 90 degrees.

not too sure what you mean by that dude- from the engine to the muffler is 1.5in then what size muffler and what size outlet pipe?
I'm trying moreso for performance than noise. :)

twomokes: Cheers that would be very helpful mate!:D

Mack,

You can make a bigger capacity tank to fit in the standard bay if you have a late Moke. My new alloy tank holds 46 litres, up from about 30 for the standard cylindrical tank. Here's a pic, the big hole is for the in-tank EFI pump so I can inject my Moke :

Image

LCB = Long Centre Branch. Extractors where the 2-3 cylinder pipe joins with the 1-4 'Y' pipe under the floor instead of behind the engine.

Careful what you buy. Moke rod change mechanisms are closer to the engine than a mini and some extractors point right at the rod change unit in a Moke. Could be a pain to install if you get the wrong one. This is my '82 Moke's exhaust. Earlier Mokes have the rod change closer to the centre of the tunnel.

twomokes: PM sent

Mokesta: very schmick- might I ask where you got the tank done? and the damage to the wallet?
LCB's- another acronym cleared up! took me a bit to find out what SU's are (showing my newness a bit hey)

Had a look at my underbody- looks same as yours for the rod change mech (now I know what that 'thingy' is too!). Exhaust dude says he's only got Wildcats- are they worth getting on in place of the LCB's? :?

Mack, I made the tank myself using a sheet of alloy I went halves on with a mate. I can send a drawing if you give me an email address. The tank has two baffels and uses 3/8" tubes for cross feed. I got some bloke my mate knew to do the welding. Total cost including alloy, folding, adhesive foam and welding was just over $300.

I can't remember the brand of my LCB extractors. I bought them in a hurry after my original extractors melted from using fibreglass insulation wrap! The middle can on my system is a late addition too. I just had the RC40 rear straight through but it was too loud so I added the centre straight through hot-dog and now it is just right.

Any of the decent Mini shops should be able to sell you a decent LCB but generic exhaust shops (Midas etc) usually don't know squat.
