Post subject:  Cooper S Brakes conversion from drums

Almost done! I wish I could say it was done...

Story to date: Months ago I went against very good advice and purchased as second hand set of Cooper S discs and have been buying replacement parts since then :( If you are considering this, my advice is DON'T! Just buy a new set! cost so far has only been a few $100 off buying a brand new set...

Fast forward to last weekend, Dr Mini helped me rebuild the calipers with new kits, new pistons, new seals. Back brake cylinders changed to S ones, new brake lines at the back, hubs have new bearings, 4 new ball joints, brand new CVs, boots, etc.

This weekend I dismantled everything, changed the left brake hose which was a piece of cake, but the right hand one was challenging to say the least! What a crappy place to put the brake hose bolt! Why have a hole cut on the left hand side but not the right? So needless to say I "redesigned" a new hole in the right hand gaurd to get to the bolt and brake switch. Even then it was a bugger so I had to remove the matic heater as well.

Anyway all in the past now, new lines are in, calipers bolted on. Then I found that the Karcraft disc pad split pins were WAY too big! These are the right pins but the tolerances were way off! So about 20 mins on the bench grinder later, they fit into the holes  Make sure you buy the right ones!!!

Whole system bled, pedal feels good but I think there is still air in there as the system ran dry due to the awkwardness of the right hand hose :? might have to do the backs again too as I don't think I did a very good job when I replaced the back hoses.

Kev had to also "remodel" the calipers so that they would clear the LS contessas. Only 1-2mm off each bleed nipple lug. The left hand one was a perfect match however the right hand one still touched, but only just...

So tonight I will angle grind away 1/2mm to get it clear off the wheel and then all that's left is wheel alignment. Then I will have a "sleeper" Mini K! no flares! yeah baby  :P Group Nb racer spec

Some pics tonight.

These calipers fit so close in there..
No room for stick-on weights, even in the middle!
Inner ones need to be clip on and `ping' off style.

With the brand new calipers I bought, there was no way they were going to clear on LS contessa's. I thought of spacers and even then, I don't think so.

Congrats Chong, almost done. You must be hanging out to drive Lillee again.

Logic suggests that you have done better than you would have by just buying a new set of brakes

You appear to not only have "now new" S brakes, but also hoses all round, Plus uprated back cylinders, Plus new lines, Plus new wheel bearings, Plus 4 new ball joints, Plus new CV's, Plus boots.

Take off the price of all the things you have there [that you would not get with a new set of brakes alone], and I think you'll find youv'e done quite well. You have as new brakes plus all the rest.

Nice feeling, knowing you have stoppers that work.
Cheers Dat

Yeah I am pretty happy with it all. Took her for a drive last night around the block and there is definately air in the back system. Other than a spongy feeling brake pedal she does stop much better. Stops straight which is more important! and stops over and over again which really what makes it worth the while!

New everything Jimbo... Ball joint kits come with new rubber dust caps. I even selected out of a collection of grease nipples the tightest, least worn nipples. About the only things second hand are the hubs themselves, the calipers, the drive flanges and discs.

I will bleed them properly tonight and align the wheels and we are good to go! :D

Yeah *cough* *cough* they stop great *cough*

Here is a surprise, the wheel alignment is still correct!  1/16 toe out, I measured it twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things but it's true... anyway St George Steering will tell me if it is really correct or not 8)

Bleed the brakes back then front, lots of pedal now :D

My mate has a pair of those plastic extentions for the 'bean can' MC... He didn't end up using them on his Nb car, so i'll give him a call and see if he wants to offload them for a small fee.
