trying to remove the wiper assy on my mini...i've undone the cover on the gear housing on the wiper motor thingo...i am supposed to take out the retaining pin (dunno wtf this is...bloody haynes manual) and then remove the wiper rack cable...here's a pic of where i'm at with this:

also taking the wiper arms off is...difficult...they just wont come off...there's a retaining clip under the wiper arm which i assume attaches it to the spindle...how the hell do you get these off? here's a pic:

first one - there's a flat bar that goes from the end of the cable to the large circle thing on the motor, at the circle end of that bar, there's a semi circlular 'E' shaped clip on holding it down (at the bottom right of your picture), use a screwdriver to prise it off, then the bar will lift off and you can get the cable out. When you go to remove the wheelboxes and the main cable enclosure, there's a trick to it, you need to rotate the bottom of the whole assembly upwards - kinda roll the wheelboxes out of the panel, they won't come straight down. Don't try seperating the wheelboxes from the cable enclosure while it's in the car, that'll cause a world of trouble

second one - there should be a small clip right above that big nut, that goes up into the arm - it's missing from yours by the looks, I'd just go around the base of the arm with a wide bladed flat screwdriver, prising it away from that big nut - it'll come off without wrecking it, they're pretty tough. There's a spline that's meant to stay on the end of the wheelbox, it may come off, but don't stress if it does, wheelboxes are easy enough to get hold of

yup, what he said.
Remove the circlip from the centre of the motor holding the shaft into the motor, then it just lifts out. Be careful not to lose bits and note how they go back together.

Same with getting the wiper arms off, prise off with flat screwdriver.
and yeah its a big pain to get the assembly out from under the bodywork, take your time, no muscles required, just patience.

the clip is there...its just facing right into the camera...i've tried prising it and jimmying it...but it doesnt seem to do much...which way should i be prising/jimmying the clip?

Ok... you can't see the wood for the trees.. forget the clip. :lol:
Grab the drive end of the arm with fingers and tilt it towards the top of screen, against the spring pressure. This will square up the driven bit & release the clip..... so you can pull it straight off the spline.:wink:

if you clean the grease and crap away from the clip you will hopefully be able to see it doesnt go all the way around. The side where theres an opening is the side that "has an opening" so you need to push the clip away from the shaft and that opening will go either side of the shaft ;)

i think we are talking about different things here...i got the wiper motor out...ouch...managed to dig a flat head screwdriver fairly deep into my middle finger...nice...no pain no gain hey...nothing a bandaid cant fix atleast :P

now i just gotta get the wiper arms off and we're in business :P

Often the arms corrode a bit onto the splines, if so you may need to hold it as I said above and twist a flat screwdriver under it.

roight...i'll give it a go when i have a day off or on the weekend...
might have to get back to ya on this as i'm still a bit foggy as to what exactly yer on about here :P the haynes manual shows this "retaining clip" on the underside of the arms...i know you said forget them...but they gotta do something...surely...

The `clip' is a spring, it will spring outwards as you pull the arm off. it's not a circlip or anything.

BTW I reckon the Haynes has to be the most shocking manual ever, for Oz Minis.. it may be OK if you drive a Rover. :lol:

Haynes are so good- my new one for the AU Ford doesn't even say what sparkplugs to use, or plug gap. Does show a pic how to adjust `em though. Muppets.. :evil:

yeah...i've noticed there are MAJOR holes in the description of alot of the bits and pieces...looking into getting one of those big black workshop manuals...

Leyland Black Book (1976 edition) still available from www.pitstop.net.au for around 70 bux. It's not perfect but at least it covers most stuff on Oz cars.
