Post subject:  Improving handling

Ok I know this subject has been talked about numerous times before. However I will rehash it again. I was just looking at ebay and noticed this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MINI-SPAX-COIL-O ... dZViewItem

Now at that price it would look like good value compared to the cost of doing a dry suspension rebuild with cones, hi lows, shock absorbers, etc. So are these a better option for a fast road car or not? I only ask again because in the past a lot of consideration has been given to price and these are a lot cheaper than I have seen quoted before.

with the coil overs you need to cut the rear inner gaurd and put a half tube for it to clear the inner gaurd and i think you need to strenghen the upper mount on the front due to there being no rubber cone to suport the weight

If you want to improve the handling of a mini the best thing to do is to return everything back to standard!
It is no point fitting the latest "BLING" item if the allignment is out or the springs are stuffed or if the ball joints are worn out.
Fix what is wrong with the car first and then improve it.

I don't think coil overs are an improvement. 8)

Well this wont be for my mini, keeping the good old hydrolastic for mine in its current rebuild, however when I am able to do my hybrid for another mini they will definately be considered.

First of all they are cheaper than replacing all the parts with the good dry stuff and I cant see why with perseverance they cant be made to handle and maybe ride ok (well compared to dry cone anyway). They have been made to work very well in many other high performance situtations and cant see why a mini is any different.

I would deffinately support the mounts as they werent made to handle the loads generated by coil overs, not sure what you mean about the rear half tube but ill take your word for it.

And as far as ball joints and other wear and tear well for me they are a given to be replaced and checked in any rebuild.

Anyway I just posted to get some views on them, I have rejected them in the past for price but they have become a real alternative for me. My 2c's

same here...

i am looking at a high-performance, full-bling rebuild so these would be quite nice assuming they are up to the job performance wise :P i am even considering KAD rear discs...

i dont see why you would have to modify the body...by the sounds of the product description...its bolt-on...and it comes with a detailed instruction manual :) reduces the chance of a screw-up i'm guessing...you can always have yer suspension professionally tuned post-install...

if you're talking about a hydro car, whack some shocks up front, comp bump stops rear (and front if you're really keen), lower it a tad, and you'll out perform a good margian of dry cars for 10% of the cost. Surprised Kev hasn't jumped in here.....

yeah i've got a hydro car...but i am kinda afraid of part availability in the future...and leakage and stuff like that...i dunno...it just scares me working on that part...ofcourse i am a mechanical n00b...

the idea of modern components makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...off-the-shelf...serviceable...and cheaper?

"Surprised Kev hasn't jumped in here.."

Kev's away on some well deserved R&R .....

As to my setup.. seems to handle alsmost as well as the docs...
Standard Cones / Hilos in the rear, worn-out clubbie cones in the front with hi-los ...

Only place kevs Hydro beast could get away from me at Wakefield (yes, a race-track) was the straight....

You've driven Wakefield ? - the damn thing is all corners.. lots and lots of corners.....Corner, brke, corner, brake, corner, brake, BLAST, brake, brake etc etc

Kevs was a Del'orto Fed 1310 mine is a turbo 998 ....
Him - Well Developed Hydro setup (Comp bump stops, good pressure, helper springs, shocks the whole bit)
Me - Northern Minis Hi-los all round, worn out (read HARD and LOW) Clubbie Cones front, good soft rear cones...

Engine power didnt een play into it, it was all handling... we've duked it out 3 times, and he only just gets me each time......

i meant that if the only place he could beat you was down the straight, it has nothing to do with handling...

a hot mustang will own a mini down the straight...but when it comes to the corners its got nothing...

This is my point...the fact that the cars seem comparable in handling would make the cost of converting a wet car to dry.....unnecessary 8)
