Heya Guys,

Got an odd question for you real die-hard Mini technical types, it's regarding the new Mini, basically I'm trying to import a Mini into the US of A as a gift for a sick relative and at the moment the Mini is stuck in customs and will not go any further until I can get the Mini complianced. The Mini is German spec and I'm trying to find out what modifications need to happen for the Mini to become US street legal. I've contact Mini in the US but they're taking forever to get any information to me so I though I'd try here.

Yes I know I could of brought a local Mini in the US but this isn't just any MIni, it's special. :)

here's a list of all the stuff the car needs to pass:

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/FMVSS/

hope it helps...although probably not...its fairly long...

this may also be of help:

http://www.importexporthelp.com/importing-cars.htm

especially the part that says "You will need the carrier?s original bill of lading for Customs clearance in addition to the foreign registration, bill of sale and all other documentation about the vehicle. You will also need to complete DOT form HS-7 and EPA form 3520-1 declaring the safety and emissions provisions under which the motor vehicle is being imported. To meet all U.S.A. emission requirements, a motor vehicles engine compartment must bear a manufacturer?s label, in English, that attests to this fact. The port of entry Customs inspector may require proof of eligibility if the vehicle does not have this label."

wow...what a pain in the arse :P

is this mini stock? or has it been modded up the ying? hence customs dont like it much...

You would get more local knowledge from the American forum here...

http://www.minimania.com/Msgthreads.cfm

There has been a fair bit written on this subject so do a search before asking questions as these guys are often asked this same question fairly often.
