How much "more" power do you really get out of extractors tossing up wheather its worth it

yep they are worth it. when i first put crappy 3-1 extractors on my stocko 998 with only a single 1.25 SU on it and absolutely no other changes, there was a noticable difference. adjusting the mixture to account for the improved gas flow added a bit more as well. no dyno figures, but surely someone has some to prove it. If i had some really goood LCB ones it would have been even better.

More to the point, now that i have put the stock manifold back on it in the other car, i am dissapointed with the performance. i will have to get som LCB for that car now. bugger the originality factor now the 850 engine is dead....

so you recommend to spend more $$$ and get better extractors also do you think i sould get a 1 1/5 carbie to go with

yeah, the LCB ones from Karcraft were about $250 delivered in Sydney, maybe a bit more to QLD. We had a thread on this a while ago, do the searchem thing.

Don't know about the bigger carb without at least a different cam or head work? others here will surely input on that. But when you get to the point where you want it done, you will already have the exhaust sorted yeah.

friend of mine used to have the attitude that if extractors were so good, then they would be fitted by manufacturers. till he became a software writer and refused to run a microsoft operating system. we said well if your unix system is so good, then why don't all the computer manufacturers install that instead. he got the point about ease of manufacture, costs etc and went and put some extractors on his VL commode. enjoyed the benefits after that 8)

extractors are great. another friend fitted them to his 2.6L toyota crown. he got heaps better fuel economy after that. same with my brothers diesel 4wd that he uses for towing his race car. it got more torque and uses heaps less fuel.

for $250 and you can fit it yourself, you have to ask why you would not do it and the only answer would be for originality sake.

An extractor story. We had access to a dyno so the car was run and figures were taken. It was then sent to have extractors fitted by one of the most reputable companies in Sydney and came back with glowing reports from the owner. Back on the dyno and guess what, it was down on HP :!:
The seat of the pants is not always a good dyno.

Can seriously believe this thread questioning the application of "extractors"

1: Good reason their called extractors
2: The engine needs to be tuned for the specific effect of the exhaust configuration

Best thing about the A series is it's usually been done before. Look at mags, read books and you'll see the effect of differing setups.

Personally use both 3-1 and LCB find the differing character of each suites differing engines.

Just remember that first you want to avoid restriction second improve any impule/harmonic effect "extraction"

they do work, plain and simple,

u would never se a race car without them,

go get some now!

blake

yer bhp may have gone down but it could have improved torque couldnt it

yea ordered my 3 - 1 extractors hope they make a difference

Meeni - a little Schooling...

BHP = Torque X Revs

So If HP is down, then either Torque or Revs were down..... guess which one ?

Extractors do exactly that - extract the spent gases from your engine. The thing that I laugh at are the "Bling" boys who have 5 inches of sewer pipe hanging out of the back of their fully sik rex or whatnot.

The fact is bigger isnt better.

The LCB combined with the RC-40 twin box gave me around 15% on standard(funny enough though that the single box lost me another 5 percent - go figure the twin box actually worked better!!)

Steer away from the wildcat brand - had them and they are junk - had holes in them after 12 months. Perry do a good set in 1 7/8 inch as do Lukey(I think they may have stopped making them for the A series). If you can afford it get them coated in heat resistant paint(Jet Hot and the likes) or on the cheap, exhaust thermo tape(keeps the heat in and increases the speed of the apparent shoch wave down the pipe).

However you just cant beat something that has been tried and tested over the last couple of decades - go the Maniflow LCB or 3 into 1. Money well spent. And for the A series, dont go over 2 inches diameter(even that is too big) - all it does is impress the chicks(apparently)

Do not use the exhaust tape!!! I used it on the first installation of my new motor, and yes, it does its job fantastically. It does keep the heat in, making the (hotter) gases flow faster, and lowering your engine bay temps. This is very importent when the Weber sits right above the 'tractors.
BUT The fibreglass wrapping actually keeps too much heat in the pipes, and therefore the centre pipe was getting so hot that the metal was starting to flake away, seperating itself. On the pipe, where the tape overlapped itself, and was a little tigher, you could actually see where it had squeezed the pipes down in size. It had actually crimped the pipes. It also showed signs of the pipes staring to melt. So, one set of LCBs in the bin. Bugger. New 3-1 Vizard spec. extractors, no fancy tape, and it is all going to plan, just for a change.

The tape also causes premature corrosion too..

I think the large exhaust pipe theory doesn't apply to turbo cars as much. A WRX with a massive 4" isn't really going to be effect with a big turbo that needs to vent all those gasses...

Now a Lancer with a 4" pipe..that's a joke..

I was waiting for some one to say the tape causes corrision. From my experiance no they don't. I had them on Morris for a good four years and did not have any corrosion when I took them off recently.

But please ensure you read the Packet...they are not good for your health, make sure you wash your hands after touching :!:

I've got a Maniflow LCB on Ha-Ha (1360 with Dellorto 45) and a Perry freeflow 3-1 on Barney (1293 with twin HS4s).
Cams are similar (~270*) and both cars have hi-lift rockers.
I find the LCB best for torque & power on 1275s... but the 3-1 is easier to fit and gives less leak problems.
Either is lots better than a stocko manifold and peashooter exhaust, on 1275s anyhow. 8)
