Post subject:  SU 1.5" on a 1098
what's the deal with putting an SU 1.5" onto a 1098?
That's a pretty broad question, perhaps I'd better narrow it down a touch:

-what are the benefits?
-does it sound better? :)
-what needle/jets etc would anyone recommend for a stockie 1098?
-do they fit on a standard manifold or do i need to get crafty?


I managed to pick up a pair for a pittance... Figure I'd best rebuild them and place at least one on my motor, god knows it needs a tune as it is anyway.

Lots of 1098 Minis here now running an HS4 (1.5") carb.
I had one on Barney's 1098, we didn't even change the needle... and he ran OK.
Easiest way is grab a manifold off a later 998 Clubby. :wink:
It's worth about 3HP gain on the 850 (auto) and 998. Probably more on a 1098.

Twin HS4s a bit big for 1098, but bobtel runs them.

Early H4 will, but HS4 used on most Minis with 1.5s have diagonal mounting bolt pattern. So grab a 998 Clubby manifold, everybody has 1-2 or 3... :lol:

I JUST put 1.5" carbie on my 1098 last weekend, upgraded from a 1 1/4"

I have had a BIG GRIN since it went on.

More Power.
Runs Better.
Runs Stronger.
Sounds Better.

Mine came on a manifold already, allI had to do was change the fuel bowl top to a single carbie type and I swapped over the insides of the fuel bowl with another 1.5" carbie I had.

But 1.5" carbie ROCKS!!! I love it!!

And..you can pick them up cheap.

Well I think mine is less at the momebt, my previous carb ate fuel.

But I will be able to tell by this friday.

my 73 clubman is CHEWING through fuel - 13.9l/100 or thereabouts at last count.

can't see it getting any worse.

You may find that your fuel economy could improve. It comes down to the efficiancy of the carb, so where the 1.25" may be starving the engine of air, the 1.5" will let more in without starving the engine as much. You may be supprised. 8)

did 7.25l/100 last tank.

hydrospastic is at normal height, empty boot, no freeway runs... hmm.

i was wondering how much of a powergain i would get from putting a webber on my 1100. can any1 tell me if its well worth it? and compare how fast it will go compared to other little cars?

its pretty standard as it is, just got exhaust and extractors pretty much

I'd forget a Weber, unless you first modify the head to breathe better, and change the cam. :wink:

man, you need to get a tune or something if you're running over 10L/100kms
should return about 7L/100kms

the carb itself wont do a great deal unless you also put on an exhaust and extractors..
economy is about the same unless you use its full potential
