Could also be running the wrong needle, or perhaps the main jet is worn so too rich at idle...
It shouldn't foul plugs just because it's idling for a bit.

Hi guys, my missus pink mini is running great at the moment but has a slight fouling problem when sitting for a length of time at idle. Say i sit in the maccas drivethru for 2-4 minutes and go to take off up the rd the car splutters and coughs and looses all power nearly (feels like a head gasket). I have come to the conclusion it is fouling the plugs. When the problem happens after another 2-3 minutes of spirited driving seems to clear it up and back to normal. I think the carbi is setup pretty good, its a 1.5inch su on a 1098. I played around with the nut under it to try to lean it out, got it to a point where it is running crap (to lean) and then richened it out abit to get it running 100%. Revs fine, engine runs cool, but just dosnt like to sit at idle for to long. Could it be worng plugs? will have to get them out tomorrow and see what they are. thanks. |

If your running Unleaded petrol you should run a hotter plug NGK BP5ES or similar and also check your Points Gap. If there too wide it won't burn hot enough. New Leads possibly too if there unknown. But i suggest you check your Points as the Van had that issue up untill yesterday. All good now. Cheers Aaron |

yeh running unleaded with the lead replacement stuff. Will have to see what plugs its running. Its got new leads, cap and rotor, but im unsure on the points, will definatly check them. thanks mate. |

sounds like a needle issue. running too rich at idle. question , did it used to run ok? if it did then i would look at plugs fouled up and not self clearing but if not then i would say a fueling issue that needs to be addressed soon or it will keep messing up plugs. like idling on choke for 5 mins. serves you rigth also for not going in to get your food.lol |

Cheers Aaron Spend under $20 on a Fuel Miser SU-750 repair kit from Davo (MiniK)- you get all the gaskets, new main jet assy, new needle & seat. Good value.. 
And see what needle is in it... could be out of a 1300 or something.

Brad I had this problem with running too rich at idle. Although mine was usually only during startup i would foul a plug and it usually was number 4 for some reason... Anyway I changed to hotter plug and I leaned out the idle. It turned out had a sticking trottle butterfly hinge thingy. Fixed it with carful adjustment of the accellerator return spring arm so that it returned back to full closed which allowed me to reset to a correct idle speed and mixture. Not sure if this can be done with SU (can't remember!  ) But I have not had fouling plugs ever since....

68 delux are you running a HIF44 cos if its just fouling no 4 then its the choke circuit O ring has sh1t itself and you need to pout a new1 in to stop it from doing that. I did a lot of research on this issue and found the or ring to be a fault more often than not. fouling plug no 4 and no3 runs a bit richer than 1 and 2, leaning it off wont help cos you will be running rich on one side and too lean on the other side of the motor. |

Brad is running my old HS4 (off a 1098)... Mixture shouldn't be too far out then, but maybe the float level is a bit high. I'd stick a kit thru it anyhow- to be sure, to be sure...

thanks for the help people. Anyone know if these kits come with instruction? never opened a SU up before, anything i shouldnt undo or play with? Plugs in it are NGK BP6ES and there brand new, but are black as the ace of spades
