Post subject: | Seam Welding a Race Mini |
Has anyone had any experience seem welding a Mini? I'm looking at welding an early round nose to add body stiffness for handling. Which parts are the most advantageous to weld? HRS |

Just be real careful Anthony that you don't accidently get any "dags" between the seams and the roll bar ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi Mick, I'd take the roll cage out I think as I'd have to repaint anyway. Thinking of refreshing the car at the end of the year and have only just found out that seam welding is allowed. I'm now working through in my mind which areas would give the best advantage. Anthony HRS PS: Have you got a Mini yet? |

Vizard has a section in his :how to modify ..." book. I can't remember what exactly he says but its definitely got something in there. Probably around the suspension towers and across the floor I think. dewey |

I had a look at my friend Graham's car at Wakefield Pk- the PO had welded all around the parcel tray both sides, and down the sides of the rear seat back. Also the full roll cage was welded into the pillars at all 4 corners. Looked pretty stiff to me.. ![]() |

Dewey: Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to search for my copy of Vizard!! Kevin: Thanks for the suggestions. The rear seat section could definately do with strengthening. Unfortunately I wont be welding my cage in as it is Alloy and I'd like to be able to remove it if I have to for repairs. Thanks once again, Anthony aka HRS |

Vizard HTMYM, p164. But, he is talking about off-road use, not racing... After brazing all the seams he talks about reinforcing the front shock mounts, subframe mounts, tunnel and crossmember etc etc. |

![]() Well, it probably would not pass scrutineering for Historics, seam welding yes, stiffening the body by welding the roll cage to the body was a no no last time I looked!!? ![]() Hence my previous crack about watching out for dags !!! Check or replace fixing bolts while you are there!! ![]() |

Very good point Mick! I must be too innocent and not think of such cheating ways ![]() It stiffens the car up alot just being bolted in anyway but I'm always looking for that little extra. Anthony |

Hi Mick, Unfortunately Historic Racing guys would read that add as such: ![]() Mini 850, tarted to look like Cooper S with twin tanks (not needed and extra weight for Historics), adjustable suspension (illegal in Historics), flares (only suitable for Group NC), 6" wheels (NC again), wooden dash (gotta come out) tacho ($10,000 motor attached to a second hand tacho....hmmm no!), new shell, complete except engine and gearbox (Complete except for the bit that makes it a Cooper S!!) Ideal for Group Nb (suitable for someone who likes talking to eligibility officers!!) or Mini enthusiast (more money and enthusiasm than experience). Thanks for keeping me in mind though. ![]() Anthony HRS (hope you enjoyed the piece above ![]() |
