OK one at a time buz...
1. Putting rare earth (super strength) magnets on the filter canister- the magnetic field is so strong it penetrates the filter, trapping lots of fine particles below 40-50 micron which would otherwise pass thru the filter, and the bearings. I run 2 of `em. 20mm dia x 10mm thick.
I cut a filter up afterwards and was amazed at what it held in there.
My sump plug magnet had NOTHING on it this oilchange, after 1500 miles.

2. Minis all came from the factory with the oil pickup pipe and strainer in the RH front corner of the box. Under `high g' RH turns the oil can run away from the pipe, and it sucks air. Bad for bearings....
Many years ago a competition pipe was designed, which sucks from near the centre of box. Problem solved.
Some time in the last year or so this pipe (Minispares version) got redesigned a bit. Some people like Graham Russell reckon the previous one was better. There is a thread on here with pics from 2 months ago, do a search.

One alternative to using a centre pickup is run more oil in box.. but that may not do for race work.

Played around with the LS heater core today and have temporarily set it up behind the grille..

I had taken it for a run before changing things and then once again after it was fitted and got around a 10C drop in water temp and today where I am, the weather temp got as high as 35C and 45C in the direct sun so it was a good test for the cooling system...

I have taken the fog light out so I might just end up buying a standard Clubman grille if I can find one for the right price...

Smokie, check that you have the heater core hooked up properly, you want the the "hotter" water, ie that from the back of the head entering the back row of the heater core, not the front row, for it to work most efficiently. I think you need to to swap the hoses over on the heater core.

They are used in press tools among other things.
Somebody mentioned they are also used in hard drives.

Can buy frome here- http://www.aussiemagnets.com.au/rareearth.html or google rare earth magnets.

I put them on the side where the finger grips are (spin-on filter), no tape required, they hang on real good.

that's what this thread is about, kev...

what do you need to do to "build one properly"?

The most additional cooling you should ever need is a heater core sitting behind the grille, IMO.

so how does one hook one of these up on the heater free (pov) models?

and how available are they?

the IT guy at work is regularly pulling apart hard drives, every time he does, he gives me the magnets...

Experience. Or get somebody who has plenty to do it for you. And DON'T take shortcuts, like re-ringing a motor. If the rings are worn I bet the bores are too. Rebore it for oversize pistons.

Use a heater outlet pipe in the back of the head and a bottom hose with heater connection. Run hoses to heater core.
and how available are they?
Go to any wrecking yard, heater model is unimportant, you just want the core. Should be plenty of Clubby ones about.

is it too much to be able to do it oneself?

other than machine-based work (boring, wedging, etc) what is there that cant be done at home?

You can certainly do it yourself but there are A LOT of things to look out for and there are a lot of ways to do it so unless you know what to look for and know how to do it right, how will you do it yourself?

Just an on going thing about cooling. I was wondering if a small scoop or even a vent was placed on the front panel between the wiper blades would it improve air circulation in the engine bay and help with the cooling at all??

Mock up...

If you need a scoop to keep your Mini under reasonable temps, there is something wrong.
