Well...I got the call from Wolf to say that all the metal work is done and the car has had the hard-to-get-to bits carefully sandblasted. I will have pics up ASAP.

The work cost ~$3K, which I was expecting because of the amount of work needed in the seams and boot.

I am a little frazzled because I was hoping he would take 4-6 months to do the work so i can spread out the costs, but his metal worker decided he was sick of working on german cars and got stuck into the Mini. He got it all done in 3 weeks and that was doing it in between other jobs.

I now need to find the dosh to get the paintwork done, but with my trip to the UK next week, I am a bit thin on the ground.

I'll get him to prime it, throw a dust cover over it and hold off till I get back. I am going down to have a look at it tomorrow. Inazuma_x, send me a PM if you are interested in coming down.

I am actually totally car-less at the moment...just sold my daily (1995 Honda Prelude SiVTEC) and have just the mini which is unregistered and in need of a new battery and a brake overhaul :P

OK. Here are some pics of when the rust repair was being started. Some of it is pretty nasty...

This looked to be the ugliest of it. I bought a new beaver panel from Tony at Minisport in SA and it has since been welded in.

I will have pics of the finished job up some time this week.

was most of this rust visible (ie. did you know it was there) when the paint was still on the car? thats what i am worried about...stripping my car and finding its full of rust...at the moment it looks virtually rust-free...but i guess you never really know until its all laid bare...

Most of it was not visible till i stripped it. It had been bogged over and re-painted. :(

Well...got back from Europe/UK a few weeks ago and went down to see how the shell was going. It had gone off for sandblasting while I was away and unfortunately, most of the boot disintegrated. :( That made the pocket hurt quite a bit, but at least there is no doubt now about the structural integrity of the car.

Now that all the metal work is basically complete, the shell has been etch primed and is ready for filling and priming, then painting. Due to the boot, the cost has spiralled out of control a bit, but as they say on the CommBank ads..."Equity maaaaaate!".

So, here are some pics... They are by far, some of the worst photos I have ever taken. I blame on being on the verge of tossing my cookies after being told what the bill was going to be for the completed shell.

Yep...it is a dent and I have pulled them up on it. Especially when I provided the panel brand new!

Brace yourself! I didn't get any warning. Ther car stripped to bare metal, sand blasted, LOTS of rust repair, panel beating, etch priming, filling, priming, painting, rubbing, painting and then duco is costing $14,500!  :x

Next time I will buy a car in good nick for around $6-8K and work from there. That being said, you don't know what is under the paint till you take it back to bare metal...as I found out. :( I also made the mistake of buying all the mechanicals first and then doing the shell. No point in having all the bits and pieces if you have nothing to put them in. The engine is yet to be built and that is another big chunk of money, which thanks to the cost of the shell blowing out, I don't have ATM.

The only thing stopping me from flipping out like a ninja is that 850's a becoming increasingly rare thanks to Cooper S replicas. It also helps hearing how much it costs to have a resto done when you just hand the care over to someone to do the whole thing. At least I am mechanically minded and am doing the majority of the disassembly/assembly and mechanicals myself.

I should have the shell back in the next few weeks to a month, by which time the new wiring harness should have arrived, so that I can start assembling it and get it to a rolling chassis with everything in it ready to drop the donk in. At least I will be able to strap the car on and pretend I am doing Targa Tasmania in it. ;) Brooooom, broooooom, broooooooom....

wolf from sleeping beauties came over to my place late last year (2005) and gave me an idea of how much it'd cost to do mine...he said that were they to do all the work it would cost somewhere between $12,000 and $25,000...just for body and paint...which is just totally outta my league...i dont care if its the best...thats too rich for my blood...and besides once the 4efte's in there i'll be moving so fast you wont be able to see the imperfections in the paintjob ;) am actually thinking of leaving the original paint on for a while to get that totally stock piece o crap mini look with a fire-breathing monster lurking under the hood...sleeper baby yeah!
