I bought the storm ecu for ignition only...have kept the trigger wheel and used it on a megajolt/juice (cant recall which one) ecu. Allows for a lot more monitioring and they have just released an app for the iphone which im looking forward to trying.

I know how you feel with slow progress, im sooo close to having mine finished. I have it running on the bench but just not had the timing to get my mate who knows about all these things to help me finish it off.

I keep looking at my traveller and buying bits and bobs for that, must stay focused on the sc engine! :D

I always etch prime my engines, makes the paint stick no matter how cheap it is

Sorry Gafmo
After cleaning and polishing the engine it is now painted with an etch primer, which is matt finish
It will be finished with a gloss paint, hopefully this weekend if the rain stops

I did read the the Etch Primer but for some reason I though it was the first pic. I was wondering why you would go Matt after the etch. Looking forward to see how the engine look after all the work you have done on the Body. Keep up the Great work

Why do I have these problems?
Fitted the flywheel tonight and when tightening up the flywheel bolt I discovered the ring gear is slipping
Looks like the engine rebuild will be limited again this weekend

What type of business should be able to fit a new ring gear?
I am assuming any reputable mini shop would have the capability or know where this task can be performed?

Go see Graham Russell, or any engine reco shop.
Basically, anybody with an oxy set can do it, you heat the gear to a straw colour all over and then drop it on. Don't blue it... it will soften.

To remove the old one I cut it almost through with the angle grinder, then split the last little bit with a cold chisel.

If the ring gear's slipping, replacing it most likely won't help, the register on the flywheel is worn, as the gear is harder than the flywheel (not one from Mini Sport UK by any chance is it?).

I either put a few tacks of weld on them (before balancing) or pin them in at least 6 places.

I think it is an original steel mini flywheel which has been lightened by PO
It only just slips as it was locking OK to undo the flywheel nut but slipping when I tried to torque the nut above about 100lbs
I will try and get to a mini shop today for further advise, but might as well aim for a new ring gear

As I said before, ALL original Mini flywheels are cast iron, none were steel.
If you weld it and it later cracks at high rpm, on a RH drive car guess where the shrapnel goes...
If a std ring gear is loose on it I'd pull another flywheel off the pile and use that instead. MUCH safer.

Finished the engine assembly all good, I pinned the ring gear to the flywheel without using any heat. No slippage now.
Finished assembly of the clutch and flywheel and then painted silver.
Car will be purple so I think the silver will be a good contrast. :)

Next job is to adjust the tappets and work out how to fit the trigger wheel for the Megajolt ignition.
Maybe slow over the next few weeks as I will be spending time preparing the Cooper S for the Vic Mini car show.
