Well Graham says yes, he gets a bit more torque from a 295 than a 940, on a small bore motor.
I don't know if he means with both stock heads here, all I can say is my 1220 went like sh!te off a shovel once I put a 940 head on it (std 1100S valves in). Head was hardly touched inside.
My point here is you will get a 940 head cheaper than a (now rarer) useable 295 these days, and porting a 202 out to be equivalent of either will cost you $$$ in labour and new bigger valves.
If you are building a 1098, they already have good torque, putting the 940 head on lets them breathe better for midrange and top end.
An 1100S or 1275LS head with stock valves will do, you don't need S inlet valves in there for a 1098 road car.

Graham has done a lot of work on the port shapes to deal with gas speeds. If you go to his workshop there is a pile of heads sawn across the ports to establish the original port shapes and another bunch where he has experimented with how and where to grind the right shape in. He has cut up heads that others would have dismissed and those that others would have thought too precious, just to inform how to get the right results.

Last time i spoke to him about it (january) he was saying that the cheapest 1098 heads (not the 202, the ones after that [i think]) are the best to use because he can grind the best angles to get the gas moving. And they are cheap and plentiful, so the overall cost of head/port/block is the best value.

cheers
michael

Graham told me the 202 (there are 2 types) is the one to port out for good port shapes, is better than the 295 for this.
You can port the common 998 heads with good results but as ports are small, much more `Detroit wonder metal' has to come out.

Maybe more has to be ground, but because there is more to start with the end shape is better.

I need to work out how to get the articles I did on this on here... damned IT... not my thing.... Fitting a 940 head with the small ports an valves works very well on a cost basis if you do not have to pocket the block (restricyed by actual valve lift), And the 'best' small-bore heads to use when porting them are the bum-basic smal-bore heads, especially the later A+ CAM4180 castings. Loads of metal in the right places so better shapes can be formed. The 202 is better than the 295 as it has more metal in the ports and valve throats/short side radius. The 295 is a much heralded, but dead duck head as the ports are too big (inlets), shiort side radius way too shallow, and valve throat area too big.

Fitting the 1275 head without the need to pocket the block is entirely feasible. You need to get your hands on Mini Expert Issue One where I covered this application in great detail. You can download it from http://www.zinio.com - I hope! If not, keep your eyes peeled on my website as I will be up-grading the site to get all this info from there soon - http://www.calverst.com

Good to see you on here Keith. Welcome.

Thanks - not been on here for a long time. Iam, as always, stupid busy but trying to organise myself a few hours a week to try and help out. Spurred on by my recent purchase of the cam follower grinder. There was a thread where some seemd to be blissfully unaware that there is a follower issue. Believe me - there is. Anyways, detracting from the original thread here.

Just like to add - but ws believed to be the best last week, month, year may not be so now. The likes of Graham Russell and I are forever tinkering, trying to eek out that bit more or better performance. Approches to how this is achieved have changed dramatically over the years.
