Very interested in this, I'm also so slowly getting bits together for a rebuild down the track, currently a 998, but considering an 1100 crank.

Do i love it? shite yes!

Would i change anything? yep, an RE83 in place of the RE13

Goes nicely (if a bit rich  )

the 13 is great! dont think i dont love it... i do!

but the 83 is just a little better for city/street driving, and more suited to a lower rev engine (like an 1100) comes on cam sooner, and has more torque rather than balls out HP.... (or so ive been told?)

that and i have a fresh RE83 sitting on my shelf... lol

If you aren't going to rev it often past 6000, use the RE83.
If you are (7000 is possible in a 1098 but it won't last forever then) the RE13 is a better bet.

I know we are talking 998-1098 here, but the following is an illustration:

Comparing my 1360 (RE282) to my 1412 stroker (RE13) where the RE13 pulled well in traffic from 2500 up, the RE282 needs nearly 3000 before it gets out of bed.
It will pootle around at 50kmh in 4th, just won't climb hills.. so I spend more time in 3rd gear in the met area.
Upside is, over 5500 it would blow the 1412 stroker away, and it hauls ass to 8000 if I need it to. 8)

Motto- if building a motor for a daily runabout roady, don't make that cam toooo big.

Not... I like my bigbores to have a bit of top end sizzle. (RE282 is GR's sprint cam) :P

However, if I was building the wife's 1412 stroker again, I'd stick an RE83 and 1.3 rockers in it (instead of the RE13 + 1.46 Corolla ones).
She does like doing roundabouts @ 40kmh in 4th, uphill or not.

Interesting little chat.

I was running 1380cc, RE13, corolla 1.46 rockers. Coool.

But then thought wifie was going to be driving the car for a bit so went back to standard 1275 rockers. Different car. But wifie now has her own stocker 998 now so the 1.46 are going back in.

However, I'd be curious how the 1.46 rockers would go on a cam more designed for low down power, as I've not really built the bottom end for revs. Probably more interested in the sub 6k power. Better for motorkhana too.

smac,
As the RE83 has very rapid lobe lift and drop, GR doesn't recommend using hi-lift rockers with it. It's designed for stockers, or 1.3 rollers. Hauls ass to 6000rpm with these.
If you want power at higher rpm though, stick with the RE13, with or without hi-lift rockers.

I'm running an 1100 +60 with an re83 & 12g202 + 1.5su. It is a ripper. I had a +20 set up with a mild cam tech cam and a 12g295. The new set up goes a lot harder than the old set up, even with standard head. Can't wait to see how it goes with the 295. Go the re83!
I'm also running a ms inlet & a set of manifolw lcb's
