Unfortunately I have to demonstrate my ignorance here. Are you people making new wiring looms up yourselves or just adding pieces, and (just for arguments sake) if I wasn't as gifted as some of you obviously are, where would I be able to get a new wiring loom from?

I don't usually buy looms, just recycle them from wrecked Minis and add/remove cicuits as required. eg: The one in my Moke is from a 76 Clubman S. I take apart some old looms for spare wires, to keep the colour coding factory where possible.

You can buy new looms if you are doing a full on resto. But if you sit down with the wiring diagram and a good workshop manual you should be able to work out your old loom. :)

I'm just re-engineering the headlamp circuits, from my `New Era' fused relay on the firewall, forward to the lamps. But I'll tidy up the front parker & blinker wiring a bit too.
<edit> I'm running Wipac QuadOptics, brung 'em in from UK.. they way outshine Lucas' standard sealed beams. 8)

I'm doing a full rebuild so I thought it couldn't hurt to throw in a new loom.

Can a headlight half blow?? The problem I'm having is only one light turns on with low beam (high beam fine), but when I wiggle the wires, both lights turn on, but very dim. Could the light just be blown? Because I replaced the connector in question and I'm fairly sure power is getting to that light, but I wouldn't have thought it would light up dim if it was blown, so now I'm confused

I recon you have simply wired the lights wrong. The high beam and low beam light elements inside the bulb come together to a single common ( -ve) inside the bulb. I reckon you've flipped these around. If you put the common onto the wrong connection all kinds of strange things happen.
Might have to pull all the wires out in the middle and identify which is which before reconnecting them.
By the way, the connectors that originally gave you so much grief are available from Hella. They are sold in car shops and are called Lucas Connectors (Ironic huh?)

I bought some neat solder/heatshrink joiners at Bias Boating warehouse.
p/no is S253 (3mm) or S254 (4-5mm). $7.90 for a pack of 4.

Apply heat, solder runs thru wires, then the heatshrink seals it at the ends. I'm using marine grade tinned cable too. No more Lucas automatic dimming headlights! 8)

I saw the same thing in a Narva cattledog. Stick the bare wires in each end and heat with a hot air gun, am I right? They looked like a great idea. If they are in the Narva catalogue they should be available in auto stores, or the better ones anyway.

The following are the catalogue numbers and wire size

56380................1.5-2.5mm
56382................2.5-4.5mm
56384................4.5-7.0mm

They also do blister packs of five per pack and a neat little butane torch just for the job.
After all that typing I have found the page on the net.

http://www.narva.com.au/Terminals_14.html

Second item down the page. I notice the butane torch is not show as it is in my book whbich is a few years old.

I would think you have earths not earthing properly. Run a temp earth to the light and see what happens. People forget that DC must have good earths to work properly.
