Great looking dash! I am considering making a similar mod for a roundie. The dash is curved compared to the straight leyland- correct??? I am wondering if anyone has made a custom jobbie out of sheet metal/timber for a morris. I have seen carbon fibre inserts in UK mags for rovers, would they fit and can you get them here in Aus?

If anyone has templates or even pics of dash conversions for a morris please post or email them to me!

Cheers and Beers

Hey that is exactly what I want - looks great. A few questions:
What is the material?
How did you shape it for the curvature of the dash?
What are you using to fix it in place?
Are they smiths magnolia gauges?

ok
1. made from two pieces of 5mm? i think MDF
2. (dad did this bit but ill try to explain) cut the two sheets to the shape of the hole in the dash then pull them forward and put blocks behind to get the curve. then put copius amounts of screws to join the two pieces and thus keep the curve. then remove the blocks and pull out the dash. it was then left for a few days and the curve stayed then we put glue between the bits and put the screws back in. glue dried took screws out and sanded it back and filled the holes. cut gauge holes and covered with black vinyl.
3.Blocks are jammed in and screwed in so it holds it in place. there are three blocks. one behind the centre, and two at the ends.
4. yes they are smiths magnolia gauges. (see here for details)

u can also curve the dash by wetting the middle and leaving it propped up on bricks with a brick resting in the middle to keep it bent, wen the water dries the dash holds shape, its what i did with mine, that looks kool 64 morris!

Thanks guys,

Look what I started here!! Should rename it the mini dash thread. Any ways there are some other great dashes that I've seen here now too. Currently trying to find some decent 4 inch speakers to fit in candy's dash to make it look a bit more appealing!! Also now on the lookout for some 2" guages to mount in over the stereo.

Ciao , Ray.

Ray,
Your saying that there were two pieces I presume the join was in the middle? Did the MDF actually flex to the shape of the dash? Can you please tell me what if any gap exists between the board and the metal edge.

Sorry for all the questions but I would just like a heads up before if commit time towards the jobbie.

Meenie,
Can you give more details about your method. I would like to see some photos of the finished product.

Cheers
Andy

ok first cut ur mdf board to whatever u want, then put two bricks under each side edge of the dash, spray water into the middle and weigh it down the the size u want, for me it was one brick directly in the centre, leave it for a long while, a day or two, put more water on every 3 hours or so, and wen its finished, cut ur guage holes add bolges etc mine has the centre clock in an angled box which is easy to make but its my idea so grrr, lol, i covered my dash with a carbon fibre look film which u can get at supercheapo or auto barn, supercheapo is 30 bucks cheaper! any way i made some attaching brakets from L shaped steal which are screwed into each side of the car and the dash is held with 2 screws on each side, none are needed in the middle as we had bent the wood,

heres mine

are you talking to me here :?: well ill answer even if you arent :D
the two bits of MDF are actually both the same size and fit in the shape of the dash hole. they have been "laminated" which allows the dash to retain the curve. there are no gaps between the board and the dash rail because the dash is pulled tightly to the edge
