Yes as Vizard says 1596 is possible, with a custom made 91mm crank and 74.7 bore. Cost more than a jap transplant, and it won't rev either, with good power. He got more power with an 86mm stroke.
A 1596 might have torque though!
Cast iron hand grenade I reckon......

In the Leyland Super Mini series here years ago, a few guys were running 1600cc (probably 1596 as you say) with a billet crank.

I could be wrong, but I think Paul Gulson might have been one of the first?

We have a 1600cc unit here with Arden crossflow cyl head & 6 speed dog engagement gearbox, with full race cam & 13.8:1 compression ratio etc etc etc-->super dooper gnarly thing really, sounds like a V8 sprint car (well ok, maybe not quite like a V8 sprint car but close) :-)

My road mini engine is a nice tame smooth drivable 1510cc donk & lasted about 8-9 years of thrashing around the road & club races nearly every 2nd weekend & then a Targa Tasmania rally & then even more club events after that & am rebuilding (just rings & bearings) it again at the moment,

1426cc is easy enough, (74.7mm -->or 160thou oversize) just that offset bore needed & most commonly need to plug & re-drill offset the end oil galleries, easy done no problems

Add stroker crank of whatever offest you like & away you go

& there are 2 common pistons avaliable for that type of engine, (amongst others that are not so common but still quite avaliable if you look around) first is the one Kev/Dr mini suggested & that`s the short triumph 2.5 piston, (they`re the ones i used) which dictates the use of a very small cc cyl head chamber &/or shaving the block (either way it`s no drama) but you can also use the triumph 2000 piston which is the same bore size but quite tall & will need to knotch out the number 3 piston if using them in conjunction with a stroker crank just to clear the dizzy drive gear,(i don`t like doing that tho) so maybe do what i do & skim/slim/trim/thin down the dizzy drive gear---> easy-peasy :-)

Hi guys

I am looking at buying a mini with a 1380cc engine. When it comes time to rebuild it would I need a new block?

Regards
Smarty

I know someone who bought a mini with a 1380, soon after he got it, it did a head gasket, and then he found that the block hadn't been offset bored and the wall cracked between 2 & 3. So if you can, find out if it was offset bored

offset bored means like this (not as exaggerated)

O--O
--O--O

instead of like this

OOOO

offset boring means more meat remains between the cylinder walls

Actually Simon your 2nd one is correct. A 1275 from the factory has #2 and #3 a little closer together than the others, when correctly offset bored the spacing is then equal.
<edit> you can straight bore to 1360, and even 1380 (just)- the real reason for offset boring used to be so you could then go to 74.0mm (1400cc) when the 1380 wore out.. but 74mm Mini pistons are rocking horse now.

well there's something new I've learnt... I guess I made up the idea in my head that you'd move them apart across the block, not away from each other...

so like this:

O-O-O-O

instead of this:

O--OO--O

:)

(KB, bugger off :P )

Not quite, you move both 1 and 2 towards radiator, and 3 and 4 towards the flywheel. By the same amount.
