Matt

I amnot easily surprised mate, have been around race cars for to long and as you say some search around trying to save a buck and some just spend, I know one guy who spent $9000 last year just to fuel inject his 8 port crossflow, as said its horses for courses what some see as dear some just see it as what it costs

Just thinking about it.... 13 grand.... If it got a bit of everything going on here it's probably worth it.

Actaully it's pretty well right on. A lot of machining work going on. I personally wouldn't spend that much on a mini engine. But I wouldn't go to that spec. I mean dam a straight cut gearbox. I was quoted around 2500 for a decent gearbox to be done up like that..... Head work is proably worth around 1500. 'Brand new' twins. that's probably worth about a 700 bucks or so new. It sounds like the whole hog. And that's what it costs. To me it sounds like a race engine. WIth the larger bolts, straight cuts and stuff. Not my style BUT definitely worth 13K.

Dale, slinky raises a good question there, is it a race engine? or is it for a street car? hope you have disc brakes and a good seatbelt too.

Sounds like Dale is brewing a monster....

A few more things to think about, this sounds to me like a 'money no boject build' with cross pin diff etc. Budget for a good amount of dyno time. No point spending all that money and not have every horse out of it. Oh yeah and you can brag.

Mind me asking who quoted you that? Do shop around but it sounds like that is what that spec is going to cost.

Cross pin diffs are good

With building an engine, there are so many ways you can go.

Why do you want to go to 1380?
What kind of power do you want?
Do you want low down torque or big figures at massive revs?

$1000 on twin SUs!!! what are they gold plated?? My dellorto cost $160 total including intake... I bet it sucks harder than twin SUs no matter how big they are...

I can understand the straight cut set costing that much but a full gearbox rebuild for $3000?? $3000/$75 per hour = 40 hours. WTF takes 1 whole week to assemble on a mini gearbox? I reckon doc could throw one together in 5 hours if he didn't stop to drink beer  What are they doing with the other 35 hours?

Mine cost about $500 for new parts (including S cluster gears, layshafts, bearings) and a few cases of beer to assemble!

$13000 sounds abit rich! you can buy a fully restored genuine matching numbers, 2nd owner, original 80,000miles type cooper S for that price!

Bottom line SHOP AROUND!

OK... well good luck... let us know how you go eh?

Just so you know I spent about $5000-$6000 for my 119.7hp at the flywheel including 1 cracked crank that I had to rebuy, and a load of new uneccessary parts.

I could have come in well under that if I had skimped on say... braided oil pressure hoses :P
