Back to the tacho questions... does an aftermarket tacho (one of those "monster" things) actually wire up to the Mini engine? I was told it needs to be a non carbie engine. onsidering MiniMafia had one, I am thinking that the above is a load of crap, but just thought I would ask anyway...

Mo is getting a custom dash with BRAND NEW ampere, volt, oil pressure and temperature gauges, plus a white faced speedo in km/h and hopefully 4" white faced aftermarket modern tacho. Throw in a couple of missile launch switches for lights and wipers and it'll be set.... :D

Love to see what you're doing with the dash Marcello. Tach must be able to read a 4 Cylinder not a 6 or 8 it may have a switch behind it

afaik a tacho hooks up to power and the coil? i guess in a new car it could go through the ecu maybe?

here is where i had my old one, I apologise now for the fur, it seemed like a good idea at the time :P

Image

it was a digital tacho fromr jaycar, came in a kit, had to solder it all up etc, showed RPM in digits, and had a little LED bar underneath that went from greeen to red for the shift, at night it looked awesome, seemed like it was just hovering below my dash..

 that fur is strangly awesome. STRANGELY I said. Not my cup of tea though.

OK I will go home and read the instructions. I am sure that will let me know what to hook it up to. There is a switch on the back for 4 cylinder and you can adjust when the shift light comes on too. I just had no idea where to hook it up to though because the one in the Charade hooks up ECU.

Dont think that Mo has one of those...

Ok

now this depends on what wires you have coming of it. This is as per a Mini Clubman so it should be similar wires but the idea is the same.

1 Tacho to fuse box
2 tacho to coil negative side
3 light surply eather the front lights or in your dash lights or the voltage stabalizer on the centre plug Letter E

Correct me If I'm wrong guys it out of my haynes book of Lies.

Hope it helps

 This should be on the OUTSIDE of the box....

Many mini minors will not operate an aftermarket tacho when fitted. It may be neessary to fit a 3amp universal diode in line in the coil wire....

Now... if they had told me that before I would have bought a 3 amp universal diode..!!!

Have copied down the pointers GAF.... Will let you know how it goes... Oh and its more good luck than congrats..!!

Hmmm... mine runs a Fiat tacho, which is just a standard V pulse electronic like most these days. Ran OK with Lucas points, still ran OK with a Pertronix ignitor in it, now runs OK with a Pulsar electronix dizzy.
What's the diode needed for??

whilst on the subject of tachos.. what is the redline of a pretty stock standard 998/1100

i dont have a tacho yet and the ones at the shops all have varying ranges
i've just beefed up the bottom end of my girlfriends 2L escort and her factory tacho is now useless (goes to 7grand her car can rev safely to 7 1/2 now) and some after market jobbies ive seen only go to 7.. so what is the standard 1100 rev to 998 aswell if its different
safely guys.. not "i got to 10 grand before i threw a rod"
and what can a midly beefed one do (furture proof it)

midly beefed (decent non forged pistons, bullet proof rod bolts etc)

If stock 998-1098 it won't see more than 6,000 tops.
I'd buy an 8000 one. Then you have a bit up your sleeve without running off the dial if you mod it a bit.
I agree you don't want 10,000- all that does is reduce the useable length of the scale, making it harder to read.
