when my 1300 a+ let go, i chucked in a *rooted* 998, but left my 3-1's, 1 7/8 inch pipe with a 19inch long coby (i think there the same as a lukey?)straight thru, DO NOT MAKE SOMTHING LIKE THIS, it sounded horrable, the 1300 puts enough gas out to fill the pipe, on a 998 its just too big! then i tried a stock 1" pipe with a smaller straight thu muffler (stock mini 850 one with nothing inside  ) that was just plain noisy with lots of backfire
SO: dont do what i did.

im guessing everyone is going to say rc40?

it all really depends on what your future plas are, and what level of noise you can cope with, and how deep your pockes are.

id go with 3-1's and an rc40 box as everyone will suggest, i think the pipe will be 1 3/4?? not sure, vever used one, but by all accounts the rc40 seems to be a fairly good setup, not too loud but much better power than std.

also what carb do you have?

usefull.

looking at your pic you have an hs4 (1 1/2 inch) which is sweet, with that filter and an exhaust she will breath nicely.

in not so sure how much an rc40 will be there as im over the ditch, but somone should know.

yer from reading that, appreantly 3:1 extractors and a rc40 exhaust seems to be the way to go, and this mite be a stupid question but wat is LCB??

LCB = Long Centre Branch
Because a mini head has three exhaust ports but four cylinders, this means that the middle exhaust port is dealing to gas from both cylenders 2 and 3, while 1 and 4 have a port each, while the engine fires 1 3 4 2 so the centre port never recieves two hits at the same time, it is more effecient to make the centre branch longer.

the green motor has a nice lcb attatched in this thread.

does that make sence?
:)

Lcb would be ideal, (some may argue on this point), however they are more expensive.
i would think about how serious you wat the engine to be in the long run?
if you plan on going further, then get the lcb as getting a better setup now will save you from buying one further down the track.
However, if you are goiing to stick with a fairly mild 998, then the 3-1's will do the job fine. really it all comes down to how much you want to spend. :?

i think ill prolly stick to the 3:1 with a rc40, cause i want it to be reasonably responsive and not have TOO much trouble going up the blue mountains, so in total ill think i stick to the 1 1/2" Single su, to 3:1 extractors and a rc40 exhaust and keep it like that for a while and see how we travel! thanks for all the advice!

thatl be sweet, just get it dyno tuned as soon as its fitted, exhausts really seem to mess with the mixture. and then your good to go!
good luck.

Hey guys

Simple 998 mod I've tried and been fairly impressed with

bolt on a 12G202 head. The original 1100 head has larger valves and is the closest thing to the magic 12G295 998 cooper head without spending huge amounts of money.

the 202 has larger combustion chambers so you lose a bit of compression but the extra breathing more than makes up for it.

In my opinion it gives a much more tractable motor with a noticible increase in both torque and power.

bonus's include:
- the head is fairly common and easy to obtain with many options for modifications down the track.
- Bolts straight onto a 998 motor with no modifications
- cheap

I have found that simply inproving the breathing on a 998 will increase the fun factor many times. A set of extractors and 1 1/2' carby are plenty to make a 998 very drivable.
