I'd like to fit an oil temperature gauge to my newly built 1340, so far the only sender I can find needs to be mounted through the sump plug. I like having the magnetic sum plug and don't really want to lose it! Are there any alternate mounting point for a sender?

Yep I have a standard smiths one that mounts through the oil pressure, just need to run a tee off it.

Doesn't the sender need to be in contact with the oil for accurate temperature readings?

Can you still run the oil pressure gauge and low pressure warning light with your set up?

The set up is on my black one in getting the injection wired up. From memory I have a long T piece coming out of oil pressure hole with an adapter on the end and the temp sender sitting in the long section then the oil pressure coming off the middle T. I dont have a low pressure light. Just got all the brass fittings from the local hose shop.

Does that work well jason. I personally would have thought it would be better in the sump.

Keep in mind the physics of what is happening - if you put it in a pressurized area it will give a different reading to if it is in the sump. And if you run it off a bit of piping you may get a cooling effect.

As well as the sump plug, I've also seen people tap a hole in the gearbox housing.

The description state: A must if you want to run a mechanical oil gauge and retain the oil warning switch.

It doesn't state pressure or temp gauge!

Initially I was thinking the sender would have to be in contact with the oil, but if the oil is in contact with the housing the oil heat would transfer to the housing! I guess the question for the physic guru's is how much of the heat would transfer?

If say the oil was at 100 degree how hot would the engine block get?

Yes best done with gearbox removed and stripped. I drill and tap suitable hole just above the sump plug, I use VDO sender and gauge.

Marty , are you running a oil cooler ??, you could fit these inline housings .

I have the fittings for one that will fit braided line, haven't got around to installing it yet.

How about in the little blanking plate on oil pick up, have to be most accurate, it's actually reading temp of oil just before it hits pump/galleries.

Remember, you don't need a precise reading, just an indication of any departure from "normal" operating temperature and as a warning to shut down the engine before damage. There are going to be hot spots around the engine depending on what is happening (revs/gear engaged etc)

I once got some adapters made up for the oil filter to block return tube...they seemed to work well with Smiths capillary type gauge and indicated consistently (so long as the engine had oil pressure!)

I agree, actually temp is almost irrelevant the gauge could have a scale of 'bananas' as long as the needle remains between the four banana mark and six banana mark all is good, if it hits ten bananas and the pressure gauge drops below two banana then panic!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:
