Well yesterday I went for a drive out to heathcote park drags to check out the rotor day they had on. It is about 135 k's and a nice little trip, except for the pot holes

The problem I am having is something that has happened in this mini before on long drives.
After driving about an hours the car starts to splutter when under load. It is weird as it sometimes wont do it at all and other times only does it mildly. Afer a few days it goes away also

I have a weber on a long goose neck redline manifold and a 1310 a+

I have had a think about this and have crossed a few obvious things off the list
It cant be freezing manifold as the at was hot yesterday and it did it before arriving at heathcote and on leaving after sitting in the sun for about 5 hours.

I dont think it is dirty fuel as the fuel as it has hapened about 4 times over the last 5 months.

The things i can think of are:
something fine is in the fuel that works its way into the carby and then after a few days un works it self.

Some sort of fuel starving

I thought it could be the use of fuel ona long drive created some sort of vaccum in the fuel tank but it does it after fill ing up also.

Thats all I got so I would like some suggestions from the guru's of minidom

P.S there was a motary at the show ( a morris minor with a rotary 13B)

yeah... if that was the case would it not be like that all the time? Some long drives it is loud and proud for hours.

thats what i thought but it was the punp itself it actuall worked randomly and stopped randomly. i checked the wires and power and everythign and it seems the pump had somethign stuffed up inside. after i changed it i had no worries.

cheers,
dave

My first thoughts would be fuel filter but only if it was missing under load like under acceleration or uphills.

Im no expert but just a thought could it be the exhaust is boiling the fuel in the lines? This would cause little air bubbles making it splutter.. This was the case in my mates corvette. I simply tooke the fuel line off and got this heat resistant sleave to slide over it re attached and the problem went away... I think its called cavitation or vapor lock or something.

This happens to our Sprite on some really hot days but normally when you sit at the lights for more than 2-3 mins. Lucky Adelaide doesnt have much traffic :D

Sorry i cant be of any help

Cheers

the weird thing is it happens on hot and cold days and it happens some long drives but not others.

I am a bit of an R-TARD when it comes to mechanical crap. How do I check the points?

The fuel pump sounds like the number one offender. I dont think it is the fuel boiling as the car did it and then sat still for about 5 hours and as soon as it started again did it again...

Could it just be a spark plug breaking down under load or even a faulty lead????

Do you know of anyone with a mini? You can ask them to show you... The way I used to do it when I had a mini on the road was Ide take the grill off remove the dizzy cap clean up the little brass buttons in the Dizzy cap and also the rotor button (or buy a new one) Then I put the car in gear and whilst sitting infront of the car just rock it hard back and forth with you hands and you can see the points opening and closing.. Change the points for the new one and then gap them using a feeler gauge reasemble it all and go for a drive..

Its hard for me to explain but im sure some of the others can explain it better, just post a how do i check and replace the points in the Chat section... I bet Dr Mini, Mike Byron, Ferel Sprint and heaps of others will help out They will tell you the proper gaps and all that aswell.

I'd get it looked at. Get someone with the knowledge and equipment to check the timing properly. Your dizzy could possibly be worn, and the advance not working as it should.

BINGO!! Exactly my same problem...to a 'T'. My Weber carb'd GT does exactly that, even (sometimes very) hard to start afer I fill up too, like yours.

Was it fuel pump? My fuel pump is a new replacement (by PO).

HOW DID YOU RESOLVE THIS?

Vapour lock causes hard starts when engine is hot. Protect fuel lines from exhaust heat and mount an electric fuel pump under the boot floor.

My mini used to cough and splutter, read: starve of fuel, when i would hammer the car for too long... it was found that the float level was set too low and it was using up all the fuel in the bowl under periods (read: 1min of continuous flat to the floor full throttle) of hard driving. If i'd coast along for a while the pump was good enough to fill it back up again for another short burst before the same thing would happen again. I was/am running a 45mm weber on a 1330cc engine, so it's a similar deal.

I thought the problem was the fuel pump but when i replaced it and still had the problem i took it to Ace Carburettors in Centre Road, Clayton.
