biggest engine u can fit legally is a 1.8 litre n/a and the biggest turbo donk i think by memory is a 1.3 litre turbo eg starlet gt,i only found this out by asking helpfull guy at trick fits at chipping norton,so SR20 would be out of the question unless u want ur butt rapped by the cops an rta..so throw a CA18 in a mini or even a astra 1.8 coz anythink bigger goes way over the power to weight guidelines or somethink like that anyways i got told...

Normally Aspirated is 3x Original weight in CC's, Turbo's 2.5 (according to DOTARS Rules). So 3x 730 = 2190cc NA, or 2.5x 730 = 1825cc Turbo

You could try and find a 1800cc Turbo and get away with it, subject to Engineer of course.

Just dug my Leyland workshop manual out from under the rubish that seems to have piled up inside my project  and checked the weights listed. See as follows:

Leyland Mini Registration Weight 643kg
2.5x 643 = 1607cc Turbo
3.0x 643 = 1929cc N/A

Leyland Mini S Registration Weight 668kg
2.5x 668 = 1670cc Turbo
3.0x 668 = 2004cc N/A

What about Vans? Roundies and clubbies if there is a difference.

Leyland Mini above is a std Clubman, my WM doesn't have weights for SS, LS, 1275LS or Roundies.

Leyland Mini Van Registration Weight 637kg
2.5x 637 = 1592cc Turbo
3.0x 637 = 1911cc N/A

Leyland Mini Moke Registratio Weight 611kg
2.5x 611 = 1527cc Turbo
3.0x 611 = 1833cc N/A

Leyland Mini Moke Pickup Registration Weight 696kg
2.5x 697 = 1742cc Turbo
3.0x 697 = 2091cc N/A

It does not matter what the BMC/Leyland book says.
It is what weight the RTA (or your relevant rego authority) has in their book that counts.
According to my old rego papers my Cooper S and my 1275LS both weigh in at 680kg

My '76 Leyland Mini S is 670 according to the RTA. I suppose 668 rounded up = 670 :D

It is what the RTA have on their books, but... It's not the base model. According to the engineer I spoke to up here (not about Minis, but conversions in general), it's whatever the heaviest (Tare mass) sedan/saloon available in the year of your vehicle's manufacture. 8) I was looking at a Ute (Morris Minor), and it was off the weight of the 4 door saloon for that year/model (which is roughly 50kg heavier than the ute, and mine doesn't even have the steel wellside tray anymore  ). Which, in the case of the Minor, means that the Series MM - the earliest ones, the ones you'd feel most guilty modding - can have a bigger engine than the others, because the original side valve engine was heavier than the A series which replaced it.

Anyone else find it interesting that the Workshop Manual D1ck0's looking at lists the Moke as being heavier than the Mini..? Not the first time I've seen that, but it's not the common belief. :?

Normal Moke is lighter, but the pick up (which If I remember came with a Tray) is the heaviest.

Ahhh... Fair enough. It's still more than the 450kg a guy I know who owns a Moke thought it weighed. And it's still heavy enough (given I reckon they'd consider a Moke to be a different vehicle, while the Van would go off the Sedan's weight) to put in a 1.5 Turbo or a 1.8 - if you could make them fit! :P
