Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience with a VDO speedo from there cockpit range.

The VDO site is really crap and does not have much information. They do have a 80mm speedo but there is no technical info on how it works. I assume it has a mechanical to electronic sender and the speedo is calibrated electronically. Any ideas????

I have just started rebuilding a moke and am already thinking too far ahead to the nice looking stuff when there are still rusty floorpans to be replaced and subframes to remove

I think they are electronic and use what is called a "Hall Effect" sensor (which is usually available separately and costs almost as much as the speedo). This operates on a wheel or driveshaft (you would have to check) and sends an electronic signal to the speedo. Only one wire needs to be run up to the speedo from the sensor unlike a mechanical one with cable.
If you don't get any joy from their website, have a chat with an authorised agent or even your local auto electrician. He may be able to fill in the gaps for you.

If you are willing to make a phone call interstate, Rodger from Howard Instruments in Heidelberg, Melbourne should be able to help you with info on the VDO gauges. He has some connection with them.

He repairs speedos and gauges.

He owns many, many Minis himself so he'll know what your after.

I rang Howard Instruments and talked to Sam, she was very helpful. Basically you are looking at about $300 for the speedo, $98 for a transducer and about $50 for them to adapt your speedo cable to the transducer. They can make it to the length required so it would only have to be very short to mount the transducer behind the motor then run a wire from there to the speedo.

You calibrate it yourself using the odometre reset button... all sounds too easy and would make for a very neat dash
