IRS is good if it is done right but the trailing arm type of suspension is flawed because it does not take the roll of the car into account. When the car rolls the tyre leans. If you made it a double wishbone you can alter the length of the arms to keep the tyre flat to the road as the car rolls.

There's an awful loy of FWD Jap (& Korean etc) crap out there running beam rear axles. Some of 'em don't handle bad either. :P Obviously cheaper to make than IRS is.
