This is the standard problem when trrying to RWC an old car.
Yeah, and it ****ing well shouldn't be. This is their profession, they should know how to inspect any reasonably common car and know what they're looking at.
What pisses me off about this is the poor person who
doesn't know the ADRs, and take half a dozen trips back and fore from these cowboys getting unnecessary work done to satify the whims of an incompetent inspector.

Remember the oldest car the guy inspects in an average month is probably a 1987 model.
Yep, you're probably spot on. I don't consider this to be an excuse by any means though -- you don't advertise a service like RWC inspections, and then try to bluff your way through when you get a car you're not familiar with.

Best to be firm but polite. Getting angry only makes the tester more likely to be more picky, which is the last thing you want.
I always take a printout of the ADR summary from the VicRoads website with me when I pick the car up too. Helps solve any disagreements about when certain ADR's apply.
THAT is a good idea!
