Any replaced the factory engine driven fan with an electric one between the water pump and radiator? Did you have overheating issues?

I've got this thin Davis Craig thermo here I'd like to try in the Moke. It looks like it will fit in the factory shroud.

Experiences please?

make sure the senor to the thermo switch(if any is under water, i over heated it twice and had to do some really quick cutting and wiring

I'm thinking of fitting a Mini 850 thermostat housing (which has a temp gauge sender hole) and fitting the temp sensor from a wreck into that, plus an override switch on the dash.

I was able to slip a capillary temperature sender under the radiator outlet hose, but had to fashion a strip of rubber with a small groove in it to act as a gasket around the thin copper. There's no stopping the leaking coolant if you do this.

In the end, mine was so quiet (superquiet in fact) that I simply left it on and took the thermostat out altogether. It was fitted under the guard for seven years on a 1275 S engine up in Darwin.

Electric fan instead of belt driven from the crank.... does this lead to an odd extra HP ?

I've heard accounts of 2-3 HP won back, but there's really no way to measure such a small improvement.

I've been thinking of doing this purely for the cooling benefit...

i've been thinking of adding a second smaller radiator either behind the grille or taking out the intake pipe for the in-car fan and setting the radiator into that wheel bay.

having it hooked up with it's on fan and switch and adjusting the amount of coolant that goes into it like the in-car heater. (coolant coming from same place into the same place next to rocker cover [or is it other way around?])

this will help with the quik slowing down of highway driving and into towns or cities where there is less airflow over engine and the engine is still hot from high rpm and hasn't cooled slowly.

switch fan on and open tap for coolant and there you have it, no over heating. turn it all off again for the highway and you keep the good combustion temp.

I have an 9" electric fan fitted to my LS on the guard side sucking throught the radiator with a manual switch setup plus a small auxiliary radiator behind the grill plumbed into the heater tap from the head, then into the water heated manifold then through the heater inside the car and back to the main radiator..

Adds about another 2ltrs extra fluid to the cooling system and it works well but will see how well it works when summer gets here...

What about using an electric water pump. That may give another couple of bhp if the electric fan can give 3 hp, no drag from the water pump may free up some 4 hp at a guess, maybe more. Thats 7 or so extra hp on tap. Dos'nt sound like much but every little bit helps

i have a thin davies craig fan on a minispares 2 core, and it copes with my supercharged engine.

i have no mechanical fan.

i will fit a heater core behind the grille for warmer weather and freeway running, and install a thermo switch.

I have heard reports that the Davies Craig water pump DOES NOT WORK. Better find out before parting with $$$.
