After careful research on the net and using those SU carby needle select programs, it would seem as though the ABX needle i have (spring loaded) is basically a stock 1.5 inch SU needle.

Its an 1100 with roadrally cam, extractors/1.75 exhaust, cooper head and electric dizzy.

i told them what i had and they sold me the wrong needle bastads!
i need someone to come tell me (honestly) that this is the wrong needle so i can justify my bastad calling..

Also is it at all worth me trying to tune the car up with this needle, or will it run lean up high and be generally bad and damaging to my engine?

What i need is an ABY?

I cant help you with the needle choice as I ask the questions.
Who did you purchase the needle off..I know this place is in Sydney but they are good..Call Midel and ASk for Silvo (Bill Sivertsen) Phone # 02 9759 5598...he will ask for all the information about your Engine so have them ready.

getting the right needle is not an easy task as all motors are different and the only true way of setting it up i on a dyno.

allegedy the ABX needle i have is a stock 998 needle.

They wernt able to tell me any more suggestions, just that id need to get the car on the road properly before could really diagnose what needle it needs.

im hoping that there is a fair bit more power to gain with a more suitable needle than ABX

Very disapointed who ever you spoke to was not able to help you...I will investigate.

Ring around to as many Dyno's ...or does anyone know a Dynoer that knows SU's In Melbourne....for the Best results put it on a fyno by a guy that knows Mini's& Su carbs...a good tune up will make a world of differnace

I wish i had a choice of dyno joints...... There r 3 places in Cairns, 1 joint said they dont wanna deal with SU's, the other joint stuffed me around so bad that ill never put my car on there dyno, n the other place ive heard only bad reports about.....

im not quite ready for that expenditure of money.

im workin on the car so as to get roadworthied, and am a bit uncomfortable trying to tune it up if the needle is very wrong and may risk frying my valves

I did Barney's twin HS4s using a borrowed (accurate) $1,000 A/F meter.
Could drive up the road and try it under varying loads...
Found #6 needles were spot on, had CP4s before.

the thing is, i dont understand how to tell whether its running lean up high apart from checkin the plugs after a spin.

its a modded motor that i never drove as stock, so i dontknow where the power is supposed to come on and how hard it is supposed to come on.

i have tuned it up at idle atm, is it a bit of a worry to send it down to get r/w running lean up high and theseguys melting myvavles or somthing??


Im thinking that the 12g295 and exhaust will increase the air flow heaps up mid/high, so i would want a needle simular to the stock (ABX) down low, but rich rich rich mid to high?? ie BDY

But they tell me it isnt this simple!

Stop stressing, just dont flog it before you get your road worthy and have a chance to put it on a dyno, as for trying to guess forget it no 2 cars are alike and to get it spot on you may have to make a custom needle by sanding it by hand but do take the advice given already and ring midel to get a rough starting point or one of the mini tuners you have been told about

ive been lookin around the site and found interesting info on making your own exhaust gas analyser using a Jaycar kit, kazjim did this at a cost of 100$ i believe.

this sounds pretty fun, i like soldering things, i was just wondering how the pricing compares with a once off dyno tune where they select the right needle for me??
