I don't think that there are any classes of racing in Australia that allow carbon/fiberglass doors. Sports sedans have to run steel doors.

Hmm so how about alloy?
Lots of sports cars out there with alloy bodies, incl doors- eg Aston Martin etc.

Sports sedan rules specify standard doors.

I was working on a Mustang and it had fiberglass doors and when the rules were changed we made up a set of steel doors. They were lighter than the glass doors!

well as i've said i am fitting a cage for chassis rigidity primarily...so having a couple of extra bits to give intrusion protection isnt a worry for me...and i'd prefer it...i dont even care if the doors are there or not :P aluminium skinned doors actually sound the go...but that company doesnt make em anymore...would have to get em custom made...

still sounds preferable to being decapitated by a steel bonnet :P i assume you are using a windshield in this mini...so...how would the pieces or shards or slivers or whatever of carbon fiber get through the glass? even if its pretty smashed up its still pretty impervious to all but the very sharpest and heaviest objects...

Just as an offshoot to this topic (sorry , slight hijack) but carbon fiber products are likely to be controlled more strictly in the future (not yet but somewhere down the track) due to airborne fibre concerns . According to research being used by NSWFB the fibers have similar risks to asbestos fibers when splintered and become airborne due to their microscopic size .

I have seen both very lightned steel doors, that had more holes than steel left and thefibreglass doors in use. In britain there is no restriction in using them on your road saloon hillclimb car.
The bare fibreglass/ carbon door with a fixed position perspex window will be lighter than the eqivelent steel door, you could, and can, make a steel door lighter than a fibreglass door, but the ammount of cutting and weight saving needed makes them in my opinion much more dangerous.
You dont need to reinforce the carbon or fibreglass they are made to be strong enough on there own.
And I would not think about driving a mini in any form of competition without doorbars as part of the cage.

" if it was a race car, i reckon consider it. But for a road car, it wouldnt be worth it....and you might agree if you got t-boned."

If your mini gets t boned by a folden or hord it wont matter what your doors are made out of,..

You don't need to go to the UK. Try Billspeed in Aurora St Queanbeyan. Bill makes aviation bits and bobs as well as front bumpers/spoilers and other components for top rally cars (the Bates Bros). He also does composite sump etc guards so lets not hear anymore of the c$*p about composites being "flimsy". A properly done carbon/kevlar door skin would be literally bullet proof and weigh a fraction of a steel door.

I've stood on a carbon kart seat big enough to hold me but which weighed less than a empty stubby.

However, it wont be cheap....

Cheers, Ian

I haven't chimed in yet so I will....

Not knowing much about carbon fibre + fibre glass but it seems to me that with engineering and fabrication cost etc as well as sorting out the rules and getting it passed it is likely to become a involved and expensive exercise. :(

With the engine you are and were :P planning to put in, will you really notice the drop in weight that much ? OK if your going for looks but this is kind of expensive bling isn't it.
Maybe get the engine / suspension conversions done and stick some 850 doors(lightest cheap and hassle free option) on it and then once the conversion is done look to start lightening it further. Removing interior would help here I think. Maybe perspex windows too

If you are going the 4wd option now concentating on keeping your subframes (front and rear), swingarms on the rear(these are real heavy) light will help more I'd think.

my 2 cents

Carbon fibre or fibreglass boot lid might be the easiest to get away with.
