Hi can anyone shed some light on what is the best option for converting a mini from drums to disc brakes. I am no mechanical engineer so the easiest and relatively cheapest option would be the best for me.

Can you help? :?:

I want to fit discs to 12inch wheels. Can you put discs on 10inch as well?

Cooper S and Cooper discs fit 10" Rims.

The Cooper S brakes are the better ones.

I have read people use Honda. Is this worth the problems in getting it to fit?

Can you fit moke discs?

camira or maybe honda conversions may look like a cheaper option when you just look at the parts cost, but if you do it properly you have to pay for the engineers certificate too. plus you would want to put taper roller bearings in the hubs at the same time.

but using cooper s discs (7.5") is easier for 10" wheels or later 8.4" discs for 12" or larger wheels is definitely easier becasue its a bolt in proposition. stick em in, and do a wheel alignment and away you go. no engineers certificate required because they are fitted by the factory.

Yes, they are 8.4" rotors, same setup as an LS1275 I think.

if you search through the posts you will find that the going rate for a full camira option is about 800 bucks. This was a complete conversion with everything that needed to be replaced and new bits fitted. The going rate for a engineer is about 300 bucks......
so for 1100 or there abouts you get vented discs and alloy calipers....
perhaps worth the effort?

If you get the front disc brakes do you need to upgrade to stepped drums on the rear?

Probably need to do it to match the (now wider) front track.
You probably WILL need smaller rear wheel cylinders (Cooper S ones- 5/8") to stop them locking under heavy braking.

Getting a Mini sideways on the freeway during straight line panic braking is a bit unnerving, I found...

i should be finishing my 8.4" disc conversion tonight (if the brake guys have finished making up my brake lines)

this is what i had to purchase:
-8.4" slotted discs with 4 pot "AP racing" callipers ($740) and mini disc hubs (new for $70 )
-adjustable camber arms ($250)
-heavy duty adjustable tie rods ($82.70)
-adjustable suspension (in my case Koni's, which i already had)
-have to either buy the kit from karcraft with the correct brake lines to suit 4 pot callipers, or have the custom ones made up... which is what i am having done ($75)
-VH40 bling brake booster ($ 8))
-13" wheels to fit over the callipers ($800 with tyres)

comes to a grand total of $2087.70

so price all adds up :( , i am now sort of wishing that i had gone with the cooper s brakes, but these will pull the car up better (which i will need for future plans, when i have my full license and enough spare time and money) so these brakes were more of an investment than anything  ... pity they dont appreciate in value

I'm just finishing up my Honda brake conversion on my Mini here in Canada. I went with new 9.5" vented Honda brakes, stainless flex lines, rebuilt rear brakes with smaller Cooper S wheels cylinders and it cost me about 1/3 the price of a set of Mini disk brakes if you don't include the cost of the 13" wheels and tires required. These brakes work significantly better than 8.4" Mini brakes on my girlfriends car, her car now feels like it has 4 wheel drum brakes in comparison to mine. Even though we don't have to pay the engineering fees here in Canada, I think I would be happy to pay the extra money if we had to so I could have these brakes over factory Mini brakes. There is also the future costs if you have to replace calipers or rotors, old Honda brakes are so much cheaper. If also designed my brake conversion so that the Honda parts just bolt in off the shelf with no modifications so there will not be the cost of machining later either. So I would recommend the Honda conversion seriously.
