the handbrake in my mini is nothing short of just plain crap it will not even hold the car on the flat.

I think i need new drums as they are pretty old and oversize (182mm) does anyone know what the max dia is for them, the shoes are ok but i think i have just lost all mechanical advantage in the system cause they are so oversize.

Grant, stock drum size is 7.0", there are 2 oversizes- +1/32" and +1/16".
If the drums are machined oversize don't use std shoes- take them to a brake place and they will bond new linings on and radius grind them to suit.

Make sure the cable quadants on the radius arms are not jammed up.... it doesn't help.
