16k kms and not had either of those issues.
I've spoken to a couple of others about the whirring noise I'm getting from the (?) power steering motor - can be quite loud and drown out the engine noise (dealer acknowledged it at 2k kms, and now says there's nothing wrong with it :? ), but only electrical problem is sometimes the indicators don't tick evenly - ie sometimes tick slower than other times.
Couple of other things but nothing that can't be sorted at 25k service.

Have you ever heard what sounds like water rushing for a second or 2 after driving it the first couple of k's after a cold start? One of those noises that isn't there when you're trying to demo it, but I've heard it several times - almost like the thermostat opening and letting water into the heater box or something - but I don't know if that's even possible. Can hear it inside the cabin, lower front of dash.

Yeah, mine does that. I thought it was water trapped in the car somewhere (reminded me of a 4WD at a dealer once - had water in the chassis rails and sloshed around under braking/accel etc  ) but it must just be what you said.

Thank f*ck for that - I thought I was going nuts - and so did the dealer  Must be "normal" then :?

So Daniel, does yours have that excessive whirring noise, especially on cold start?

Not that I know of, although I do have a rattle on some cold start ups that reminds of a loose timing chain, goes away with a minute or so though.

I'm very happy with the car though and can live with the little noises here and there, just want to be sure they don't develop into something bigger I guess. For instance - there is a clunk in steering moving left to right from passenger footwell whilst stationary - dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong though. I also get a harmonic vibration/rattle at 3,200rpm on overrun - ie during gearchanges etc - dealer said it's characteristic. Thats about it I think

Interesting - that rattle when cold is in mine too - seems to go away a bit when oil pressure builds up and then when motor warms up. Actually, to be truthful the car sounds sh*t when it's cold.
I've got no clunk in the steering that I've noticed, but seem to get a lot of clunks through the transmission when changing gear (manual gearbox) - if I'm not 100% smooth on the changes, and keep a little revs in it, it will clunk as if there's a bit of lash somewhere.
I haven't noticed that vibration rattle you mention - I'll try and take more notice, but I'm pretty fussy with noises and notice things that passengers can't notice. I've got a rattle in the clutch pedal at idle that nobody else can hear, but because I've heard it it's now all i can hear!! Need to turn up the music a bit I think!

mine is going in for a service monday .

the powersteering noise you can hear is normal, from what i have been told, they run electric powersteering pups, so thats where the noise comes from, or something similar!

Yeh, they reckon they tried every other bini in the yard, but agreed mine was the loudest, they did something to it cos for a few hours after it was quite tolerable, but now it's as bad as ever and they are just telling me there's nothing wrong with it.
So what's pissing me is that 1st visit they say "yep, that's not good" and adjust something to quieten it down, 2nd visit they just shrug their shoulders and say "normal, nothing wrong with it". In my language that means "too hard basket, live with it".
It's so loud it turns heads. I have listened to others and can barely hear it.

I'll be making my own noises at 1st service...... :x

Some of the problems that some of these people have with the airbag systems is amazing I could be up for some fun and games buy the sounds of things

The thing that annoys me is that being a mechanic i have always fixed my own cars and at work we have a scan tool that will tell me what is going on with the engine side of things but it wont tell me anything about the body electrics or airbags and the BMW dealers charge that are close to where i am have a insane labour rate and it get rather expensive having to go back again and again

My Bini also ticks first up in the mornings but that is due to the cartridge oil filter that they use they dont hold the oil up in the top of the motor like the spin on oil filters do

print out the mini2 issues. I lived at my dealers with Airbag issues, but they were fixed my R53s. They were dust on the seat belt sensors. everytime

Just to top off my good luck run i was driving my Bini home for a lunch break the other day went to change from second to third and the clutch pedal didn't feel right and i couldn't any gears suspect the clutch plate has spat a spring out of the middle of it.

now i have to pull the gearbox out and have a look. I have been doing a little bit of reacerch and found out that it is a 15 hour job.

I still have do do some diagnosing to comfirm this but i am pretty sure that this has happened so i am not going to put a standed clutch in it if they only last 60K i am going to look and c if i can put a stronger clutch in it.

The thing that gets me is that the car has never gone on a dirt road and i have never spun the wheels in it i have always babyed the car cause i know if i break it i have got to fix it when u are working on cars all day the sometimes last thing I want to do is work on more cars on the wkend. Depending what sourt of week that i have had

Has any one else had any clutch issues with thier Bini

Had the Bini serviced today - am now told that the whirring noise is the "air intake valve" - wtf - they told me it is an electric motor that pushes more air into the engine when it's required. Uh hu, I'll have to take their word on that. Final answer was "normal operations".
I had another Bini as a loan car (normally get a 325Beema), had done just 2000k, and it too had the same noise - perhaps even louder than mine. So I think I'm destined to live with it.
Peter.

The powersteer pumps are an electric hydraulic pump which can be quite noisy. They also run a fan under the motor near the rack this can also be noisy. I have seen a couple with blades missing from objects wiping them out which makes them extra noisy.

The newer MINIs with the Turbocharged Peugot motor in them are much much quieter. I have driven a couple of them now and have noticed little if any noise in comparison. I am yet to work on one or look at one closely but they appear to have fixed alot of the problems that the earlier models had.
