I have rang the Mini Garage in Melbourne and they said they can tow 1500kg :D

That means I can get one hopefully

Lynda,
Your commodore would be lucky to tow that.
A mini has a 1.6 litre engine (less than half the commodores) so it wouldn't
handle even half the towing wieght.
The next problem is stopping, if the trailer is heavier than the car it won't exactly
do what would be reffered to as 'stop'.
Anyone here seen that vid of the red hatchback towing the trailer up hill, before
it rolls back down again? :D
The tyres for a small car wont be rated that high either.

I'd ring another MINI garage, 1500 is way too high!

Ask them to put that in writinmg.

See the previous post from Harley, 650Kg for the Cooper is correct.
MINI doesn't give a towing capacity for the Cooper S because they say a tow bar cannot be fitted.

MINI FINI in the USA sells a kit that allows a tow bar to be fitted to the Cooper S but I doubt if it handles 1500Kg

Oh damn it. I will ring another MINI dealer and see what they say I think....

I'm getting the caravan/camper trailer weighed on the public weighbridge here in cobram to see exactly how much it weighs to see what I'm up against anyways :D

I'd suggest buying the MINI, and then go out and find a well looked after older
falcon or commodore (say a VN or similar) for towing stuff.
VNs are worthless these days, but still haul ass pretty well. :D

We dont want to register 1 car just to use it to tow the caravan. Thats 4 regos then, I dont think so, not with the price of registrations

See how we go with the other Mini Garagaes and with the weigh in of the can

Forget the MINI, get one of these:

Will happily tow 1 tonne (braked) along, and get you round town quicker and
much cheaper than a Cooper. 8)

Thats more than the car weighs. Talking out of their arse.

Coopers can tow, S's legally can't. In the US there are some custom tow setups made (they basically hide behind the reverse/fog light assembly) but its not for anything bigger than a small trailer (more made for a bike rack), and remember it will be totally illegal as the car is not rated for towing.

Just because the manufacturer has not specified a towing weight does not mean it is illegal to tow with it. The RTA (NSW) rules specify what rules apply to cars without a towing weight.

Quote:
If the vehicle manufacturer has not specified the maximum towing mass, the maximum towing mass is:
One and a half times the unladen mass of the towing vehicle, provided that the trailer is fitted with brakes which are connected and in working order, or
The unladen mass of the towing vehicle if the trailer
does not require brakes

So looking at that you may be better off with a Cooper S

OK, so then as its a chassis modification you'd really need to get it engineered then to be legal. Really don't think you'll find someone who'll engineer it!

So 1.5 times the mass is almost 1600 kgs.
It wouldn't be safe to tow that given the manufacturer only recommends 650.
The rear suspension is only rated to 700 kgs on a MINI, and even if it does hold up,
the front wheels will just spin the whole time, and not actually pull the trailer along.

I never said it was safe  I just pointed out what the RTA rules are. 8)
