Hey Peoples,

I've got a 71 Leyland Round Nose Mini, going to custom build from ground up.

After months of research I decided that I wanted to make it an awd. Now I'm not a fan of Honda, and wanted to stick to somewhat of a unique motor. Toyota being the answer, a 5efte to be precise. Unique in a way that the motor is a hybrid of two other motors. Now mod plans of the engine build sit at around 400hp.

Everything seems to be okay to go ahead with one except.... Running gear !

For the life of me I can't find any (I mean any) Ep awd gearboxes. I'm in Australia and plan on keeping the total build locally. The body, fabrication, awd subframes, engine and all their little bits have been planned for and can be done. But without a gearbox I can't go very far.

Now price isn't to much of a factor (within reason) for the gearbox. It's just that they got wiped out with the dinosaurs lol. Have been able to find the in the uk (overpriced + shipping + if damaged or lemon - I lose big time). So basically I want to keep it local if I can.

So my question is, is there anything at all that will work as a replacement? Can it mate to any other awd gearboxes (awd celica) ? Or am I about to spend a lifetime looking for this box?

Thanks guys, look forward to the responses.

Cheers shortiee

you can probably mate it to a 4wd celica 'box...

reasoning:

I think I've read that a 4efte can be used with a 4age 'box

I know a bloke who khanacrosses a 4wd Corolla wagon with a 4age in it, he told me that the 4wd celica 'box is bolt pattern identical.

Though a 4wd Corolla would be cheaper

What about the drivetrain from a 323 GTX / laser turbo from the 80s?

4wd Corolla wagon box maybe.

That was my thought, I was pretty sure the tercel had an early 5E engine.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I've heard the same thing as you SimonK, however just as much say it's a fail. Apparently the case needs to be customised to fit and that's the start of the problems. Lots of people on both side of the fence with the celica awd gearbox for 4e/5e. Everyone mentions it but no real confirmation of it being done.

Interesting, seems like like the Corolla awd is the way to go. Would this mate straight on or need custom work? To be honest don't know much about the awd Corollas. Will have to research it.

323 or laser as in Mazda and ford, is that even a possibility?

Thanks guys

Do you expect to register it ?

Yeah, I will have it engineered to go. Why?

Might be a ICV.

Get ready for lots of cash spent on vehicle standards and testing !

no, AWD in a mini can be engineered & registered, a few have had in principle approval - none built though... I have a mate with an early Celica AWD that's still registered as a Celica

What ? A ICV needs more time money and testing , and can be engineered and registered.
Mates mates or a same chassis concept aren't the same as this situation.

Op , best of luck and let us all know how you go !

I guess I'm assuming that OP is going to make subframes & mount them the 'normal' way for an engine conversion, rather than as a mini shell mounted on top of a custom spaceframe/chassis which would make it an ICV

shortiee,

I'm a bit ahead of you with my project - I have the car ('68 roundnose) but I also have the running gear - yes I have a starlet ep85 gearbox. & yes I'm in Australia too.
prob the only complete awd setup in aust - however I'm using a 4efte & hybrid irs.

Just need to find the time to work on it.

gearbox is the hardest bit to get hold of - I can assist if you in finding one if you want one, but I can tell you, it wont be cheap.

hope you can do the fabricating yourself, or you have very deep pockets - as it won't be cheap to do.

Toby

I was making the same assumption - probably standard modified front subframe and a mx5 or similar rear end and modified tunnel. The 16vmini forum has a few and builds and there is a bolt on rear end option - the mx5 based mintec frame.
I don't know for sure , but the main thing about this build that pushes the likelihood of the need for a one off build is the change is drivetrain layout , and modifying the body. Exciting to think about but beyond my brain and cash flow !

Doesn't it work on some sort of weird calculations done by engineers? i, e. Amount of modifications to original parts?
