Post subject:  Places in Australia to get driveshafts made.
Before I resort to buying from overseas, who here can tell me where I can get some new driveshafts machined up? Don't want welded ones, do it once, do it properly.

I've been getting quotes from the industrial companies I'd normally deal with for work, but when they want $1000 per shaft + gst + hardening by a third party it seems a bit overkill, and I'm sure I've seen people mention on here from time to time getting new ones for $1000 a complete set.

What I'm thinking is I'll knock up a dummy shaft from half a mini one and half a suzi one welded together - then send it to somebody and tell them to make me some newies.

So, shaft manufacturers, suggestions?

Personally I'm getting a set of billet titanium shafts made at Force Racing in the UK for about the same cost (for the race car).

I had the cvs done in my last car at this place and he said he could do custom shafts not problem.
I was going to try him for mine but have not got that far yet.

Me too - AGM Engineering at Emu Plains.

Driveshaft Engineering in Brisbane wanted in excess of $1000 per pair which was a wee bit excessive.

However, I am going to give this mob a ring and see what they can do for the Leonidas' shafts (in Brisbane, sorry Harley):

I don't mind getting an interstate mob onto it, I just don't want to order from overseas to save $50 only to find they're made of chalk and don't fit.

I had my shafts made by a mate for the machining part - so that doesn't really help (see my thread for the finished product). But after machining you've got a fair bit still to do:

- Splining
- Heat treating and shot peening
- Post machining and grinding

Unfortunately all this costs money!

To give you an idea of costs this is what I paid for two drive shafts and one layshaft:

- Material EN26 approx. $150 for bar stock
- Splining $500 - partly mates rates
- Heat treating and shot peening $180
- Post machine was mates rates

So if you get one shaft done, minus the machining will cost around $310.

Add to this that you want to give a machine shop a shaft that they need to copy. This takes time too. They usually prefer a drawing. So if you have a set of vernier calipers and some time I'd suggest providing a drawing, even if it is only a hand sketch. Then provide your mock-ups with the sketches for reference if required.

If you need any help specifying the splines, lead ins, tolerances for run-out and post machining tolerances let me know and I'll help where I can, but sounds like you're in the industry and probably know what is going on.

Edit: forgot to actually mention the places I had work done.

EN26 bar - Interlloy

Splining - Pfitzner Performance Gears (but they don't get too much into custom gear normally unfortunately, so it might be a tall ask)

Heat treating / Shot peening - Tooling and general heat treatment.

Both places in Adelaide.

I used Mini potjoint driveshafts (the long ones), shortened them to the length I needed,
then had the Suzuki spline machined on the inner end $250 all up.
I have done this on 3 cars no problem.
The potjoint driveshaft is the same diameter as the Suzuki spline.

AGM were a reasonable price but i did break two sets...depends on your power output i guess and how abusive your drivetrain is (clutch, you etc.)

I'd recommend making sure the shaft diameter is smaller than the root diameter of the smallest spline and hardness around 37R, you want a bit of flex in there.

Something I've seen them do in the UK is to use MG metro driveshafts, and just cut them down in length and respline.

Minimad - I seem to remember for some reason you may have tried something like this with no success - is that right?

The first set i did were cut and resplined starlet shafts to match the outer CV.

The problem with this is the starlet shafts are very hard and it's very hard for a machine shop to cut them and they need to soften them, subsequently when you go to reharden them they can become brittle and you get varying levels of hardness from the new area to the old.

i see the titanium driveshafts are lighter - but have no idea of hardness/ shear strength, twist strength of 6AL4V Titanium alloy - in my mind i see titanium as strong but brittle? - not so? - love some more info - looks like a very good product if able to take the power. Cheers

Mini mad, when you got AGM to make them. What did you supply them with?
All I have with mine at the moment are the inner starlet bits without any shafts
