Hi guys,

Separated the gearbox and engine last night with a view to getting it on the stand to do gaskets and bearings. Found the clutch is stuffed which is no big problem, but also found a big crack through one of the large bolt holes in the top flange of the gearbox casing. Should i get this welded up or will it be easier to get a different housing? Are these boxes shared with anything else? It looks very similar to the box in my AE82 corolla, but I'd want to know it for sure before I attempt to pull it apart.

I'm a welder not a Toyota owner- but alloy gearbox casings are so easy to TIG weld successfully that IMO it's a nobrainer. Weld that puppy.

I would get it welded, the material they are made from welds easy. If you want to change it need to use a "Bell housing" from a 4e or 5e, when I say bell housing I mean half the gearbox as they do not separate, the other half is the same as other C series transaxles.

Sweet, thanks guys. I s'pose I still have to pull it apart to weld, but at least I don't need a new one.

Cheers
