Post subject:  legalities ?

im doing some reasearch on conversion and was wondering some of the legalities and who has managed to get it passed by an engineer and how they did it

my first would be rose joints on the control arms,
next would be boxes in the firewall (for headers and such)
third would be flip fronts,

and fourth i was wonder what kit subframes have previously been passed in australia, (ie, allspeed, minitec)

as far as im aware rose joints are a no-no but im not sure why ?
boxes in the firewall are ok but need to be done well
and flip fronts are ok as long as they are steel and dont change the structural rigidity of the vehicle ?

am i along the right track here ?

Thanks,

Nick

i would recommend ringing an APPROVED engineer and asking him. do it all down the phone. if you don't like his answer ring another and ask the same questions.

this way you'll find out what would be involved, and what some engineers will pass and what some won't touch.

Rose joints wear out very quickly in road use. You can get rubber seals for them which will extend the life but it is probably not enough.

hey nick, i'm pretty new to the whole modding bit but i've found that in vic, the flip nose that's featured on superfastminis.com is not road legal. i'm not sure on your state but i'm guessing it's not that different, tho i'd still love the idea of getting one, if there's a legal metal one than i'm hoping it's legal....
best of luck in the search and i'll keep my eyes open for us both..

The minitec Vtec subframe isn't passable, because it increases track width by too much.

I imagine it would be similar with a lot of other pre made subbys.

Contact tricky, doesn't he make 4EFTE subbies?
Or buy one of the subframes ready to go that is forsale, or the 4efte project, complete with engine subby AND car for $5K.

I've seen modern cars with rose joins on them standard (but not 100% sure if they were on the control arms).
Firewall boxes need to be approved by an engineer as your modifying the structure of the car (IMO "technical" any weber box should be mod plated).
As far as I know flip fronts are a gray area, some engineers will pass them others wont and it may be easier in some states than others....

first time i've heard over 200hp atw called 'small fish' in a mini :D but excited about the challenge of an engineered vtec pushing bigger numbers.

Contact Rickman Smith at DOT.[regency]. He is the head engineer there and talk to him before you start. He is a pretty good bloke to get on with and if he knows that you are doing everything correctly then he will listen and give good advice.

Good luck trying to get that approved in SA hope you have heaps of cash to go through all the emissions testing. They do not like aftermarket computers or forced induction.

92 is correct, you'll need to spend huge dollars to pass their complex emissions tests.

If you want a turbo motor, buy a turbo engine. If you want N/A get an N/A motor. Unless you don't mind getting it through Regency legally then modifying it later, which has it's own problems (obviously) but that's another thing altogether and usually isn't discussed on this forum much (for good reason).
