Post subject:  Aftermarket Pedal Boxes Legal?

Hi All,

I was wondering if fitting an aftermarket pedal box is legal in QLD.
Also the one I'm looking at has in cabin master cylinders not sure if that changes things.

Cheers,
Isaac

it's legal if an engineer signs off on it

Is that the one in my thread? I'm going to see an engineer soon so I'll let you know. May have to make a bulkhead or move the firewall. But I can't think why it would be an issue. So long as it complies to adrs.

If I can jump in on this thread; I recall seeing a pedal box that sits on the floor (i believe it was in a race mini). Has anyone seen similar? iirc it was for sale from minimania at one point

blue_deluxe,

I did see the one in your thread and it reminded me to ask the question. I was originally looking at the Wilwood pedal boxes and then I found a site called OBP this is the pedal box I'm looking at: http://www2.obp.uk.net/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32_52_143_338_144&products_id=488&osCsid=25dc509f2

It does look similar to yours now you mention it.

I have to buy a new master cylinder for both my brakes and clutch and I thought why not just buy a complete pedal box with new cylinders. It also takes care of the brake bias issue without having to use the standard bias which is a pain to bleed from my experiences.

@simon, thanks I figured as much I was asking if people have had them engineered.

Cheers,
Isaac

Thats the same one ive got, i got mine second hand from the uk with masters and bias adjuster with it. The issue with getting it engineered could be the brake bias from memory. So i think ill mount it under the dash away from everything.
Where abouts in brissy are you?

Nice yeah they are a bit pricey new but I've always considered stopping power more important the going power.

It looks like there are different kits one that have the cable adjuster for bias adjustment and ones the don't. Bias adjust from inside the car is the only thing I could see that would stop an engineer from passing them.

I'm in Stones Corner... I'm in the process of moving my car from Wishart so I can try and get it on the road (4efte conversion). I've got the frame made and engine in most of the wiring sorted just have to throw some more money at it now for brakes, driveshafts interior bits and pieces and probably heaps of other stuff I can't think of right now.

you could have trouble with adjustable brake bias.
engineers dont like the idea that it can be adjusted.
the usual practice is to cover the adjustor so that you need tools to adjust the bias. all so you cant do it on the move

I don't think the adjustable brake bias is legal for the road.
I don't think that you can get an off the shelf pedal box with enough brake bias to suit a Mini anyway! It will keep locking the rears regardless!

The brake bias is adjustable in the since you need a spanner to adjust it. For the one that I'm looking at anyway.
It works like this http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/balancebar.php

This one has been made by a guy specifically for minis (I found his build blog on a uk forum red mini with a supercharger) so I think the bias should work all right.

Ive just got it out of its box and got a few quick photos. The adjuster knob is easy, theres a grub screw to hold the cable in, so take that out and it comes off.
Means i can put it in if i need to adjust the brake bias easily.

And if you need to change the bias enough you change the master cylinder size, its far easier to change than a mini system.

Yeah that would be cool once I get my mini to my new addy in Stones Corner.
Its currently at Wishart. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks it will be here.
I can't really be bothered doing a build thread on here because I'm a Software Engineer so its well kinda like work lol.

Those pics look good blue. If I buy one I don't think I'll get the cable bias adjustment.
I just have to convince myself thats its worth the $$$.
