Post subject: | Advice on what conversion to do |
Hi With the interest in engine conversions I have decided to look into doing one. I was going to do vtec (that was many years ago) but I have been told engine is too heavy compared to others. I have talked to my panel beater and he said the daihatsu. I have been in a daihatsu one and at only 48hp or so it was pretty good. However, I am thinking maybe paseo or sera engine in a mini and maybe a small turbo to hit the 150hp mark. I have looked and found paseo car for $400 with engine I could work with. Does anyone want to give me advice. I don't have alot to spend and it needs to be simple (i know nothing is) but still. Thanks |

What do you want out of the car? IMO if you were fairly happy with 48hp stick with the A-series, it will save you a lot of money and go very hard with a bit of work. Otherwise daihatsu CB70 3-cylinder is a good engine, light and easy to make the 150 mark. The 5EFE is overkill when the 4EFTE can easily make that power. |

HP is what is needed I want to be able to have more reliability then an a series but a lot more power Price plays a part as well lowest=better better=hp I don't think 3 cyc is good as its uneven or am I wrong in saying that ![]() 4EFTE might be a goer, 1.5L starlet engine? Thanks |

The 4EFTE engine is a 1.3L A 3 cylinder engine isn't too bad. Their very small which makes fitting it in the engine bay much easier. Their a lot lighter as well which helps the power to weight ratio and helps balance the car out a bit which can't hurt. Their is a build on here of a 3 cylinder Charade donk and it is very nice and easy looking. Here it is; http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31234 |

I am sort of leaning towards the paseo engine as it is 1.5L and should fit the starlet subframes that are made up. In reading about the Daihatsu engine they sound rare |

The Sera and Paseo engine is just a Starlet engine basically. If you went that route you could probably upgrade to a 4EFTE (Starlet Turbo) later. I reckon the Echo/Yaris 1.5vvti is worth a second look. Compact, reliable, will always be easy to get parts and similar power and torque to a Suzuki GTi. The dash even has a centre speedo which would lend itself to retrofitting into a Mini. I've seen rolled or statutory write-off Echo's with sub-50,000km on them go for under a grand at the auctions. The only thing that's stopping me trying it is time. I've got too many other projects already. |

AFAIK I know it hasn't been done yet. The engine and box is physically smaller than a 4EFTE but I don't know what it weighs. There is/was a TRD Turbo kit available, but I don't know what the cost or power figures were. |

I don't know what the laws are like in your state (as I'm not aware of what state you are from) but it is much easier to use a stock engine than anything modified as you'll probably need to perform an emissions test. 4EFTE is a good balance as it makes 136hp standard and is capable of much more. |
