Post subject:  Different CV tripods
Hi,
Does anyone know how many different sizes were used for different starlet engines?
Ive got a 6 speed manual for a 4efe corolla, a 4efte auto, and a 4agze layshaft. And they all have different sized cv bearings. I know Hallsey had this problem, but not sure how he ended up solving it.

The other question i have is how can i get the pots off the gearboxes? I have to put the auto ones on, as i have tripods to suit those. Or do i have to disassemble the diff at the same time?

I can't advise on the CV tripods sizes, but to get the pots out of the gearbox I made up a little wedge tool from some scrap steel and levered/popped them out (click on pics to get full size ones)

I cut a 50mm wide opening in the steel to go around the CV cup. A hammer is then used to firmly hit the end of the steel plate which compresses the circlip on the spline and levers the shaft out of the gearbox.

The 4agze layshaft is huge and won't fit, it is from a E series gearbox not a C series like a starlet.
I didn't even know that a corolla came out with a 4efe 6 speed only a 4age 20v 6 speed.
I know that a 4age C56 20v layshaft has the same size as a 4efte C52 gearbox.

Ive done a bit more investigation, and had a look through the different joints ive got.

From the left its the 2 small uni joints ive got, and the pot joint from the passenger side of my auto starlet.
Next is the end of the driveshaft from my 6 speed manual. (came out of an ae101 corrola and was imported from japan)
Next is the 4age 20V layshaft, which is the larger size of the pot joint, the same as the drivers side pot joint on my auto which is at the end.
The shaft with the big uni joint is the right tripod for the big pots.

That image is a comparison between the small and large pot joints.

That is the difference between the 6 speed manual and the small pots, its pretty unnoticeable, but the small tripods dont fit the 6 speed ones. Theyre a few mm smaller, and ive no idea where i put the tripods they came with.
The splines for all of the joints are the same.

What pot joints do other people run? Ive got the layshaft with the large pot joint, and ive fitted the other large pot joint to the passenger side. Just need to get a spare big tripod joint.

The smaller ones appeared to be from starlet gearboxes and the larger ones from the corollas. I got some spares from a wreaker off an early - mid 90s ADM corolla. :wink:

Unfortunately, I got rid of all my spares when I left Kalgoorlie. :cry:

To clarify what Mearcat said: To get off the pot joint you need a lever and a BIGGER hammer! :wink:
They pull out, but have a round circlip/spring holding them in place.

I got the pot joints out really easy once i realised they're exactly like mini pot joints. I just got a big screwdriver and levered them out. Almost too easy so ill have to get some new circlips from somewhere.
I think ill have to find a friendly pick and pull wrecker to get parts like the unis.
