Post subject:  engineering costs?

Hi,

I have been wondering this for a while. What kinda money do people pay for engineering to get their engine conversions passed?

Thanks Blake

I haven't completed a conversion myself but from speaking to a couple of engineers in adelaide they have quoted around $2000-$3000 for your basic swap with that cost increasing with the more work that needs engineering. the crazier you go the more testing needed.

I got everything engineered in one go and was around $800, but each subsequent amendment you want made will cost you around the same amount..

Typhoon is correct for SA, not sure about other states.

SA requires track testing which brings the cost up alot.

Blake, as discussed previously I got $800 plus another hundred because the bast... persons at the ACT MVR didn't like the engineer report. However, that person is no longer a registered Vehicle engineer in the ACT and Mario et al hung up in my ear.

If an engineer is happy to be exposed to the risk of approving your car for as little as $800 then go for it!!!!!

The engineer I have used said he would want to see that I had replaced cut away steel members with new bits with equivalent moment of inertia members and that all joints were sufficiently designed to minimise the risk of fatigue cracking. This was the bare minimum. So a big, heavy subby with decent mounts to the original bits would be ok. Trying to make it lightweight with the minimum new steel would push him towards wanting a full analysis done and that would be $$$

Consider that with the resources boom getting started all over again, good engineers are in demand. $800 including GST would get you precisely 2 hours and 41 minutes of my time at my work's charge rate. What quality of engineer are you getting if he will spend days with you for $800? Ok if he is semi retired and loves cars or is helping guys like us out as a hobby but...

What is involved in becoming a QLD transport accredited engineer?
Ive heard its either be a qualified mechanic for 10 years, pay some money and fill a few forms in and your away.
Someone else told me if you are a university accredited engineer you can fill in a few forms, pay a bit of money and you can do them to.
Can anyone prove/disprove what ive been told? The qld transport gives near enough nothing about it.

Too right JC!

There are many modification codes like seatbelt replacement, engine substitution etc. The codes that Authorised Officers (note that QT doesn't call them engineers) are allowed to certify depends on the qualification of the person. So yes, some AOs are experienced mechanics and some are professional engineers.

wait for a club day at Mallala and get Rickman to go for a spin in your car. He likes collingrove :D

One cheap way to supply engineering calcs is to do them your-self and submit, You just need a engineering degree :)

One interesting thing here in SA is older designed cars that have a full chassis do not have to meet most structral requirements. A friend of mine just got an old '55 chrysler convertable reg. The body is dented and crap, but he drives it around
