4age, theres a clubby down south that has the conversion done i think (extended the front if i remember correctly?) but for 86kw (claimed) at the engine why not just go a 4efte and have a hell of a lot more fun?

4AGE come in 86kw, 88kw, 100kw, 20 valve and supercharged variants. There is a lot more scope for bolt-on mods with the 4AGE family than the 4EFTE.

The problem is the gearbox on them is just huge, which is the main stumbling block. The Starlet box is much smaller.

There is a car in Perth running a later twin cam 20V, but it was built in the UK and imported later. Not sure you could build it here and get it registered as the track has been majorly widened.

The Sydney car had a 4AGE engine adapted to fit a normal Mini gearbox and I'm pretty sure it was a dedicated track car.

Cheers,

The only one I know of here is Warwick Agustin's sports sedan Mini, it has a 4AGE, chain driving into a Mini box.
It's been running for years, doesn't seem to be too unreliable.

Late last year, I was talking to a guy at the Dept of Transport about approval for my 4EFTE conversion and we got talking about Rich's car here in Perth. The guy said that it was "touch and go" to whether they would allow it to be regsitered due to the massive increase in track (due to the big gearbox). It was allowed mainly because it was an import but was told they would never allow one to be built like that locally. NSW may have similar laws about not widening the track too much, let alone ~5 inches!

I think the best part about a 4age is that you can put a turbo on it and still be legal.

A 4age gearbox is the same size a 4efte box, both C series toyota transaxles. Just the bell housing and ratios are different.

Are you certain? The Corolla box looked much bigger to me, and I was told on Toymods the two do not interchange. :?:

Its the bellhousing that makes them non-interchangeable. Do we know if the bell housings can be swapped?

yes, bell housings can be changed.

you just need to use the bell housing that come with the engine.

so you can use the 4age and 4age bell housing with a starlet box or a 4efte engine and bell housing with a corolla box i you feel like it.

Damn, wish I hadn't sold my Corolla autox car now. If I thought I had a snowball's chance of fitting the driveline into a Mini, I would have kept it. The damn thing had 180,000km and went beautifully. :(

So it's the engine that causes the track increase then, not the gearbox?

you don't need to increase the track.
