Post subject:  bike conversion...reverse system

Howdy guys,
it has probably been brought up before but i couldn't find it, but the reverse system available with the Zcars motorbike rear engine conversion kit, is this road legal here in australia (south australia to be more precise)?? I am just wondering at the moment as i am in no position to start this build, i am simply trying to get my head around what is needed.
Cheers
Brendon

1st step - talk to an engineer in your area. Chances are - no. Have a search on the site as this was a hot topic a month or so ago.

Didn't the Goggomobil have `electric' reverse? You started the engine to run backwards..

Pretty sure there is an ADR? rule excluding electric motor reversing though. There's a rule for everything...

No, don't tar the Goggo with that brush :P
You're thinking of the Lightburn Zeta

It had th same maximum speed backwards as it did forwards
Luckily, it wasn't that fast in either direction.

I don't think the problem is in the reverse being electric (look at prius for example) but rather in the bike engine conversions most people don't generally put a variable speed drive in to control the reverse speed accurately. Most simply put the battery direct to a starter motor which of course will only move the car at one (nominal) speed and it would be rather jerky too.

As did the Austin Champ - it was 4l Rolls powered, but weighed as much as the sun, so also not fast in either direction!

Likewise the old MB Unimog from years ago.

I had a truck with two reverse gears, too fast and too slow! So most times you used "too fast" and kept the foot away from the throttle.

Quaife do some differentials for that purpose:

But I guess 'POA' means "if you have to ask you can't afford it"

Jan it`s about $6000 landed here, inc all freight & import taxes etc

I`m pretty sure that`s the one i will be getting for my hillclimb special (when i can source the funds tho obviously--> maybe in a few years :-( )

we actually have this buggy inside my shed again, up on stands, stripping it down for final fiddly things, painting & cladding in alloy sheet,,, we should be on the track with it next year (minus the reverse gear at this stage tho)
