I have removed the brakes & driveshafts from my Starlet front cut and need to know how to remove the main driveshaft from the outer CV. When you pull on the drivehshaft, you can see it move back & forth about 1/2mm in the CV joint but I can't see any circlip holding it in place. I don't know whether I should be putting the shaft in a vice & using a BFH to hit the CV off the shaft... or whether there's a proper way to do it :D

There is a circlip in there. Point the CV skyward (holding the driveshaft) so gravity will help the circlip fall into the grove (shaking will help). Whilst still pointing the CV skyward, holidng the driveshaft, slide cv upwards such that you feel resistance (meaning the circlip is preventing it going any further). Holding the cv in its current position (compressing the circlip) point the CV at the ground, hit with rubber mallet. I guess it doesn't matter if you use a "non rubber" mallet, you won't be using those CV's ever again.

Don't be tempted to put them in a vice.

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ABS CV's CAN YOU PLEASE KEEP THEM OR THE ABS RING?

Thanks JC. I will have a look tonight.

And my Starlet front cut does not have ABS so will pobably end up scrapping the outer CVs.

How can you tell if a starlet has ABS?

The ABS equipped car will have a box (usually aluminum) in the engine bay where all brake lines lead to before going to each corner brake. They also have a wire/sensor attached the the rear of each brake disc assembly for detecting when the wheels lock up. The ABS ring is usually a splined ring that fits around the CV joint that the sensor utilises.

Are you supposed to be able to see the circlip on the shaft (when the CV & driveshaft are still together) or is toward the end of the spline? I've followed JC's steps above and given more than a few big smacks but it's not coming off.

There is still a bit of grease around the balls in the CV joint - would this have an adverse effect in getting them apart?

When all else fails, take it to a CV mob. They'll have it off in no time.

I say take it to a CV mob because I have one around the corner, your local one may not be so local.

HIT IT HARDER!

When i went to remove one of mine it was very tight ended up smashing the CV to get it off, ruined the CV but the shaft was OK
You are ment to be able to remove them same as a mini one hold the shaft vertical and hit the CV with a hammer.

I ended taking them to a CV joint shop today and they knocked one CV off in 30 seconds (with a big metal mallet) and had to get a grinder to the other one and cut the CV off. The guy said that about 1 out of every 3 CV's they have to cut off.

The workshop did! :( Meh - They'll be going in the bin anyway

Also - what is the thick rubber ring around the longer driveshaft for?

Harmonic dampener to minimise vibration.

Should have hit it with a bigger f&%king hammer!
