Post subject: | lancer engine conversion ?? |
howdee guys and gals . Just wondering if anyone here has used a 1500cc lancer engine in a conversion before ? My wife has decided the her clubman needs some go so here i am . At first i thought i might turbo the old a series 1098 but have since been offered everything i need from a donor 02 lancer i just want to know first if it would fit ,and second , what the vic laws are like with these kinds of mods? Oh yes , and of course what sort of hassles to expect with insuring the thing once its done . Thanks |

First thing would be to measure the Lancer engine to see if it physically fits. Then talk to an engineer with regards to them signing off on the project. You need to have them on board from the start really. It is a lot of effort to go to so I'd make sure that the engine in question is worth the effort. The time involved, cost and complexity of the swap will be much the same regardless of the engine you use, so put in the best one possible. Think about how you want to use it, what upgrades you're likely to make in the future and choose accordingly. Also have a look at what has already been done, and how they've done it. Why reinvent the wheel if you don't have to. You are likely to be looking at $10k plus as a starting point assuming most other things are up to scratch and you do most of it yourself. A halfcut costs less than 2k. You can see that getting the engine for free doesn't necessarily make it a whole lot cheaper, especially if it makes everything else harder. I don't want to discourage you, just give some perspective. I'm in Melbourne's inner west and currently doing a Starlet conversion into my Morris 1100. If you want to come and have a look you're welcome. Cheers Madmorrie |

It can be done, but due to it's configuration (especially the gearbox) it is a big job to squeeze into a mini. You would be better off looking for a more suitable donor engine. |

awdmoke, The Lancers came out with two different gearbox configurations dependng on the year and engine capacity. You need to know which model its from. |

the engine is a 1500cc with a 5 speed 2002 model, what configuration i have no idea, to be honest i know next to nothing when it comes to fwd stuff. just looking for more hp and reliability, reliability being the key word as it is for the wife. surprisingly she's saying supercharge it and im being the voice of reason ?? A world 1st i think ![]() |

Can you get what it is? 4g15? I have a 4G93 (in my lancer) which is the 1.8. The 4G15 is a complete nugget (good lasting, powerless engine.) it will last forever but just doesn't have anything behind it. Where as the 4G93 which is a 1.8 it is a good engine, mine has just clocked oer 320xxx and still going strong. If your going to put the effort for a 4G15 or 4G93 you may want to consider a 4G93t or even the 4G63t engine (2.0lt, came out in the evo) and depending how much real go you want, a 6A12 (came out of a FTO) but your pushing it with the 6A12. Keep in mind that all the engines above have the same mounts, so if you do indeed put a 1.5 in and not happy, there wouldn't be much trouble swapping it. |

I imagine being a 2002 model it's not a bad motor. A mate of mine had a 1.5 Lancer from the mid-90s and it was sohc and had a little carby, needles to say it wasn't "fast" so hopefully by '02 they upgraded it somewhat. The 4G93 is a very well respected motor indeed so probably a much better option. But if power is not of the greatest concern and money isn't an issue then go for the 1.5. It should be decently faster than the average Mini but won't be the hottest Mini around. |

the 4G93 also comes out as a SOHC, but that is an easy conversion just using a 4G92 head and you can even put mivec on it, depending how keen you are. I personally wouldn't waste my time with 4G15, the 4G93/92t/63t are all by far a better base. |

For what your wife needs you can get bloody good reliable power out of a rebuilt 1098 for far less money. |
