hey boys and girls, after hay this year im planning on fitting a toyota starlet 4efte motor in my delux. it will be built for track work, sprints and hillclimbs etc. i have started a bit of a list of what i should expect things to cost and what other hidden costs may arise. price are all estimates, if you see anything way out, let me know! here goes: motor - frontcut from importer $2k fuel system: - braided lines $200 - swirl pot $80 - 2 fuel pumps, (possibly use the electronic one im using now to fill surge tank, and a different one to feed motor ) $ 400 electronics - handmade loom, spliced mini- starlet (price for extra terminals heat shring etc) $80 - aftermarket computer? yes no (possible later upgrade power fc or similar ) $1500+ tune stopping - david rosenthals disk brake conversion front (allow $1500ish ) $ 1500 other items- consumables, steel welding rods etc etc $250 -exhaust $500 -drive shafts $....... -cooling (intercooling/ radiator) $800 - luxurys?( boost controller turbo timer etc etc) at the moment that is all i can think of. fire away people who have done it or have some ideas! cheers jamie |

Jamie, I take it this means it is not going to be able to be road registered? If its going to be used for track work, sprint days and hillclimbs, why the 4EFTE?? Cheers, Tricky |

Further to Tricky's question does that also mean no engineering costs or did you miss them in your price as well ? |

Exterior body mods are nil. The engine bay however does not fair so well. |

You`re allready up to about $8K plus you still have cost of subframe & body work & suspension system upgrades & engineers reports & blue plate etc etc etc, then the labour charge to put it all together & make it all work nice |

I'd double what you've got... What about: Bonnet Pins Timing Belt Clutch Inlet Manifold to fit in roundnose (modification or new) New Brake Lines New Brake/clutch Master New clutch Lines New Exhaust Manifold New Dump Pipe Oil Filter ---------------------------- Suspension? Adjustable Tires? |

most engineers will not touch your car and approve it after it's built. if you ever want to put the car on the road, TALK TO AN RTA APPROVED ENGINEER before you start. he will make sure that everything is up to the task. and its not even that expensive, last engineers approval cost me $200, for an inspection of the car before i started. where we talked ideas for a couple of hours. i didn't cost anything when he came round and a visited 1/2 build, to an update and approve the changes, i wanted over the original build spec. |

Seriously Mad, If I was doing a hillclimb, sprint and track day weapon I wouldnt do it as a road car - its diametrically opposed goals. If it is going to be something like the above, I wouldnt necessarily go the 4EFTE. I would look at something larger CC and N/A |

WOW, you won't find many engineers that cheap! The risk and liability are too much for that little pay. Maybe one-man-band engineers are brave and under-paid but a larger consulting engineering company wouldn't charge less than $150 per hour for someone sufficiently qualified. (the eng gets paid 1/3 of that though...) So, he drove both ways, twice, spent a couple of hours the first time and maybe 1/2 hour second time: assuming 1/4 hour travel time, 1 hour to do all the paperwork including tax invoice etc. You've got 4.5 hours. So your bloke charged $45 per hour and didn't even have time to do any check calculations to see if it was all OK. ![]() ![]() I think I once worked out that to get one of the guys at my work to do a proper job of a sub-frame assessment and approval, one that would survive professional scrutiny, it would cost at least $15,000. That doesn't include any construction, just the check. Once he'd done a few he could use a comparitive technique that could cut the cost down to maybe $5k each time.... M |

Oh,,, i though he was talking about a road registered race mini But if he was only after a hillclimb special,,,, wellllllllllllllllllllllllll ![]() the obvious answer is Bike engine,,, rear/mid mount,,, light as possible,,,, barest of essentials,,, & then simply remove the brain & add it to the balls ,,, lower center of gravity you see ![]() or maybe fit one of these---> http://www.powertecengineering.com/ or one of these---> or any of the other "umpteen" similar designs of lightweight motorbike engine based weapons avaliable if you`re filthy rich anyone buy a lotto ticket today?????????? ![]() |
