Post subject:  Subframe Mounting

I thought about reviving an old thread but I thought this deserved it's own topic.

Subframe mounts!

I'm around that point where I'm poking around with the subframe - which goes off to Tricky this weekend - and I want to beef up how it attaches to the body.

IMO it needs it as it was originally designed for a 1/4 of the power that it's receiving :?

So has anybody else considered this? What have you done?

I was thinking put bigger bolts in as they look pretty puny. Also, would studs be a better option? I know studs are better than bolts in almost every application, so I wouldn't think much would change here? What size would you drill/tap them out to and what grade?

To be honest Sam most of the frames I've seen go in minis are an interference fit so they're wedged in there!

The way the frame bolts to the car with multiple 'faces' I can't imagine it would 'move' around much. Only thing I've ever considered is welding some plates on the inside of the cabin floor where the frame mounts to the floor.

Its not uncommon for racers to weld the seams on the frame to prohibit flexing but I've never seen the way it mounts to the car changed. FYI - it is likely that Tricky will seam weld the towers of your new subframe.

Plates are a good idea, might do that...

Well two of the subframe tower bolts sheared off when I was removing it. I tried to drill them and use and 'easy-out' but it wasn't 'easy' The bolts had rust-welded themselves in. So I've drilled and removed the plate that they bolt into and I think I'm going to have to get it drilled and tapped, or get a new plate made up, unless someone knows where I can get a repro?

Tricky could probably make up a new plate with 7/16 bolts..... though I reckon I'd be hunting out another subframe.
