Post subject:  upgrading the G13B
HI
Just wanna know if I replace my G13B Mk1 components in my Mini with
1)adjustable cam gears,
2) a larger coil kit, and
3)a larger (45mm - the maximum) throttle body from the 30mm stock ones.

Could they really improve things much/a lot and also will they have any drawbacks such as shortening the lifespan of the engine, impacting timing and the electircs, etc? And also which of these (1-3) would have a more noticeable improvement in comparison - so that you will definately do first.

I am unsure to how they can replace the cam gears given the extreme tight space in the engine bay. :shock:

1) If you're looking for bang for buck cam gears with stock cams are more of a bling thing.

2) Larger coil kit? I presume that means the G13 runs a dizzy and coil? I think you'd be better off saving the money and putting it towards an electronic ignition setup like MegaJolt/Squirt.

3) Throttle body would be a nice upgrade, not sure how far you could go on the stock ecu though...

If it was me, I'd be saving up for a programmable ECU ( if you don't already have one? ) Go the exhaust/intake route first, elec ignition, bigger throttle body, cams, cam gears, etc. That should make a nice lil suzi 8)

I can't imagine any of those things hurting the lifespan of your engine, unless of course it's tuned incorrectly or you raise the rev limit.

Ok so I checked out your thread you've got going on, damn nice car! 8) Hopefully mine turns out something along those lines :)

So it looks like you've got the intake and exhaust all sorted... Next thing I'd suggest is the electronic ignition. After that it's all about getting more air in -- so you could upgrade the throttle body, or depending how hardcore you want to get, go quad throttles/ITB's. Then it's just whack the biggest cams in you can handle and tune... Depending on your cams and rev limit, your injectors may need upgrading too.


That's the general formula for an N/A engine :wink:

Of course if you went forced induction that's a whole other kettle... :twisted:

id go with the larger throttle body first off and maybe bigger injectors next.. shop around for one of those "performance chips" if they make them for g13b's. if they do than you could probably buy a cam/chip/ and valve spring package

Hi Ben

I would suggest fitting a EMS like a adaptronic ecu, a Sr20 throttle body conversion and a set of BD14 cams as they are mild enough for the street but gives a nice kick between 3500-8000rpm :lol: .

you can also visit redlinegti.com its a GTi forum heaps of info on modding NA's.

Looks to me like you have a Mk 1 Gti engine, so "chipping" your ECU is out of the question.

1. Good gains can be had with the adjustable cam gears. You will need some dyno time too though.

2. Unless you are having ignition problems, a larger coil pack will be a waste. Save up for a MS (will give you many more tuning options too)

3. The SR20 throttle body is the best bang for buck mod. Will not increase power, but will allow increase responsiveness.

http://www.redlinegti.com/ is the place to search. The stock ECU does not manage timing on the Mk 1, only fuel. Stock injectors should be fine with the above upgrades & can be forced to deliver a little extra fuel with an adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator (not rising rate FPR).

It's because they're new billets. You could get them reground a lot cheaper.

If you're after heaps of power I'd go turbo too.

After you start going custom cams, etc it would work out cheaper to go turbo and have more power to boot..

Billet is usually referred to as blank of steel or aluminium that is a section of metal used for rolling into bars, rods and sections. It can be a product of the ingot route, or increasingly today produced directly by continuous casting.

Billets are then ground or machined into new shapes!
