I can get a 1.5 litre (1495 cc), Hyundai Excel, 5 speed manual from a mate for $300.
What are your ideas on putting it in a square nose?
Do you reckon it would fit and comply with QLD road rules?
What's a conversion cost roughly?

personally i wouldn't dream of it for the world...but that's me

They make what 88HP? can get a 998 to make that much power - cheaper than the conversion too..

Hi Kenno,

Sure why not!

They might not be the one and only powerhouse mill out there but if out and out performance isnt on your agenda, then why not.

Depending on the model Excel, they will come with EFI, 5-speed, EMS and good reliability - who cares if its a Hyundai!

Just take a measurement of the LOA, and see if it fits, it should.

An added bonus is that you will save $$$ as compared to a 4EFTE or G13B which you can spend on other performance, cosmetic or suspension/handling mods.

Hyundai's arent the slug everyone thinks, they perform bloody well on the Group N world rally scene!!

My $0.02

Cheers,
Tricky

I notice lots and lots of the ones in the last shape are starting to smoke... I bet the ones being rallied have an engine rebuild after each event

I'll sell (edited - not see) you a twincam 1600 honda frontcut including brakes and fuel tank for a grand ;)

The twincam ones do have potential. There was that twin throttle conversion that Zoom did which really woke it up.

Still, the cost the engine, while a big chunk of cash, probably ends up to only a fraction of the final cost after you get a frame designed/made/engineered, upgrade brakes, suspension, get a computer for it, get it tuned etc, etc...
So I'd go for the best engine you can since all the other stuff will cost the same weather its a Honda VTEC or a Hyundai Excel motor.

Cheers

yeah, thought it may be a bit underpowed but you don't know if you don't ask. imagin being beaten by a excel mini though
Personaly my preferance would be to stick a big 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2L in one, we all know cc is the key to power, reliabilty and drivabilty.
Why arn't their many big cc conversions going on? :?

Because I think over ~1.6L N/A? are illegal under current laws in most states. Lower limit for turboed ones.

of course.... RTA/Vicroads etc. aren't going to ask you to take the head off your engine and measure the bores..... ;)

we run a twin cam one as a rally car at tafe, they arent slow, however they are fairly limited as performance upgrades go, compared the the vtech etc

Also size and weight starts coming into the equation..how much weight do you want over the front axle?

getting a car to go fast isn't as simple as finding a motor which can produce big brake horse power, I think a excell engine would be a good conversion as they probably have a little more torque without the high end power, high end power is only good if you want to do high speeds. i dont understand everyones obssession with how much power a engine can produce at 7500rpm or more it is useless for accleration, which is they main aim of an engine conversion, that and reliability. An engine which produces good torque from low rpm and continues through to high rpm is what will make you accellerate fast

I can't find much info on Hyundai engines. Appart from mixed reviews on the cars... :?

IMO if info is scarce, don't touch it. Having said that there are many of the 1.5 motors down at Upullit for the taking.

As an engine coversion, I wouldn't bother. If it it's the same engine as in the Hyundai Scoupe (like I said, very little info on these cars, could only find info on other models) it makes 81hp@5000rpm, and 91ft.lb @3000rpm. Not impressive at all. You could get that power at a lower rpm from a hot 1275, for a whole lot cheaper, and still keep a good exhaust sound! For comparison, my mini made 74hp atws@4900 with poor igntion.

The price of the engine is just one aspect of an engine coversion. When a 4E-FTE makes 135hp@6400rpm and 116ft.lb@4800rpm.

I see max torque is much higher up the rev range, I'd say that's got to do with the turbo and boosting. And we all know these 4E-FTE can make much, much more power than stock quite easily.

Excel? IMHO don't bother.
