Post subject: | 5E-FE instead of 4E? |
Hi guys, Due to all the 4EFTE conversions flying around the place.. I've recently had the idea of sticking a 5E-FE 1.5L nat asp engine in my Mini K. I'm pretty sure the only difference in the two engines is the block height. I'm considering the 1.5 over the turbo 1.3 as I dont need turbo power and I dont want to upset the weight balance of the car too much with massive turbos and intercoolers, etc. I also think I'd have more clearance in a roundie with only extractors to worry about and not a turbo. Would It be a matter of making up a similar subframe to the 4EFTE one and off I go? I already have a place to do it for me and It seems relatively straight forward, just wanted to check there was nothing thats going to bite me in the ass when I bolt it in... ![]() Cheers, Sam P.S: I also sized up the 1.5 twin cam engine in my Excel which looks like it would fit ![]() ![]() |

Ok so I had another look at my Excel engine and I think it will fit nicely with some massaging... ![]() Its the 5E-FE or the 1.5 Alpha... ![]() |

If your talking about the exel engine not the toyota engine the exel has a massive gearbox I doubt you will have the room. |

I am still partial to the G13b suzuki twin cam engine revability and reliabilty. |

G13b are hard to find. Nice little motor but how much better are they than a nicely built up A series? The ultimate atmo engine would have to be a Honda Vtec, the best being the K series. 2.0L or 2.2L. They have some on the road in USA, and dam, they go hard. Or I guess a B18 would be fun, not quite as much go as K series but still, more thna enough power! ![]() |

they are heaps better standard than a A series built up 100hp ozzy delivered model with 110 hp jap spec plus plenty of performance mods available a mate had a 1310 worked a series I had a standard g13b fuel injected motor left him for dead in all ways take off top end and fuel efficient plus 5 speed standard high tech motor for it day . |

5e-fe has a much larger inlet track and plenum - big enough to force you to go custom $$ |

My mate at work had a stocko G13B bought new. My 100HP+ modified 1310S used to waste him off the mark to 100KMH at least. At 100,000 km, his gearbox was toasted- the bearings were shot. ![]() I like Suzukis too, great motor but I think the gearbox is marginal. This is not an isolated problem he had. |

G13b sounds like a nice motor, but I think my mini would put out more atws power on a dyno than a Suzuki GTi, not mention my mini is lighter. But then again, my mini's boosted, so it's a little unfair. I just don't think a G13b conversion is justified, when a 4EFTE or B16/B18, are so much better. You could always turbo a G13b though.... that would be fun. ![]() |

G13b turbo 123 kws at wheels only gearbox trouble when you flat shift and take off using 4500 rpm launches . stock engine turbo charged. Broke one then replaced with cino box all good so far. then they start breaking . the motor weighs 60 kilos and gearbox probably another 20 . light good power pack but yes the toyota starlet motor is the next generation of performance. And readily available. By the way I have a GTI Turboed aswell .... |

You don't want to upset the weight balance of the car..but you want to stick a 1.5L motor in? The 4EFTE retains about the exact same weight as an A-series does - My Clubby weighs exactly 700kg with 4EFTE engine and that's about the same as it weighed from the factory... |

mini's arnt balanced that great to begin with, they are front heavy. and i agree with mini mad on the weight of the engine. |

It would weigh the same or less as a cast-iron A-series. I only want to match or have even less weight in the front than a good A-series. And the way I'm going to add more power to my A-series is by a supercharger, so you have to take into account the added weight from those things also. A 4efte would be nice ![]() ![]() |
